Create your individual trackers to capture those series where you're up to date but the series isn't over (more books planned for release).

Nora I think it's reasonable for me to get caught up on 3 series:
1. Wise Man's Fear (started yesterday) - Kingkiller Chronicles
2. Republic of Thieves (and Thorn of Emberlain if it does get released in 2018) - Gentleman Bastard Series
3. To Die But Once - Maisie Dobbs

I'll also keep making progress on the Outlander series and the Inspector Gamache series but I'm so far behind and the wait lists are so long at the library that I don't expect to catch up on both of those this year.

Michelle | 3258 comments I have a question. I'm reading a few series but is actually part of a whole series. Confused me too.
As a whole it's The World of Kalqour
But then is made up of series Clans of Kalquor , Clan beginnings, Shalia's diary. Etc.

This is my question: how do I mark this? Up to date as a whole or treat it as individual series ? I suppose it's up to me but as I'm reading it as a whole I'm confusing myself of how to mark it.

Let me see if I can provide some examples that may be helpful.

Karen Rose has a series we’ve named Romantic Suspense because she’s never given it a name. All the books are connected by characters and storylines. Some time ago, she created a chart that grouped the books by city and some decided to organize the books that way. Terrible decision as they weren’t grouped in storyline/published order. Even the author recommends reading in published order. But, the city series groups are out there, not authenticated by the author but certainly a series on GR. I would NOT label the series as complete or up to date based on the city groupings.

Then there are those series that have spinoffs that are loosely connected. Several examples: Harry Bosch & Harry Bosch Universe; Mercy Thompson & Mercy Thompson World; and Night Huntress & Night Huntress World. The “universe” and “world” lists are designed to provide continuity for the best reading experience but the spinoff or connected series can be read independently without serious repercussions (case can be made, though, that Night Huntress has big issues in one book if not read in order). In these instances, the separate series should be considered individually as up to date or complete as they’re finished.

I hope these distinctions prove helpful as you decide the best course of action for your series. In the end, you’re the best judge. The fact that you’re reading the books as a whole would leave me to suggest you mark them that way.

I agree with Jonetta that you are the best judge of what constitutes a series and when to judge it as complete.

I can tell you my personal approach is to read in publication order. So for Karen Rose's series, I ignore the city groupings. The series will end for me when Rose stops writing it.

For the Night Huntress books, I read the main series and all the spin-offs in the order of publication because the characters and details in the two standalone installments (and Night Prince spin-off) were important to later books in the primary series.

Another author that this works for is Kristen Ashley who also has several cross over books in various series. Reading in publication order is the best way to keep it all straight because this is usually how the author had it in their own mind while writing.

Based on this, I think that reading in publication order is the best way to go 99% of the time unless the author suggests otherwise.

Michelle | 3258 comments Thank you Jonetta and Lauren. My problem is that it's not really spin offs. It's almost prequels to the original and that's were it gets confusing. But I think you have given me some good advise. I think the series that's reads as spin off I'll consider a series on it own were the rest will be dead as part of the whole.

Thankfully I don't have too many of these kinds of series. But I usually follow publish cation order unless the author also advises otherwise.

Great points, Lauren. KA has a suggested reading order on her website that I learned about from you after missing the backstory of a crossover character. That reminds me that it’s also a good idea to check the author’s website.
