Handle with Care discussion

(spoilers) Anyone else notice the major similarities between these two books? Especially with the braces scene(s)? In Handle With Care Amelia needs her braces off and her mom argues with her and slaps her and Amelia runs away and gets them taken off anyways. In My Sister's Keeper the older brother Jesse needs to get braces off as well and he gets in a fight with his mom and the mom slaps him, he still gets his braces off by taking them off himself.
