The October Science Fiction Theme: Books You've Put Off Reading is open for Nominations.

For this one, I think it will have to be a bit of an honor system, but to distinguish between other favorite read themes, etc., I think these nominations should include those books which you have never read but have had in the back of your mind as something you want to read (or on the back of your TBR pile or whatever) ....

Remember our few rules:
1. They must be available as an ebook
2. One nomination and one seconding per person
3. No nominating your own book and
4. Mods can veto a nomination if they decide the book doesn't fit ... :-)

And, as always, authors selected in the past 12 months may not be nominated. For a list, you may check here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Athena Shardbearer | 12 comments I nominate The Black Prism The Black Prism (Lightbringer, #1) by Brent Weeks by Brent Weeks. I loved his Night Angel Trilogy and have had these books for at least a year.

message 3: by Michael (new)

Michael I'd like to nominate Dune - probably one of the most influential SF books ever written, but I've never got around to reading it.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

My nomination is The Praxis by Walter Jon Williams.

message 5: by Kenny (new)

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Sorry, I had to delete/remove mine as per the instructions.... I have read it a few times, but am overdue to read it again :(

Maybe someone else has Dhalgren on their to-read list. :)

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll second Dhalgren. I read it in the 80s and have been meaning to reread it.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

Clare wrote: "I'll try again for Dance Of The Goblins. It keeps coming up in conversations here and there and I keep intending to read it."

This looks more fantasy than Science Fiction .... :-(

Same with this one ... does it qualify as Science Fiction? I see some grouped it as Science Fiction Fantasy but it's blurb reads like fantasy....

message 9: by Kenny (last edited Jul 17, 2014 07:34AM) (new)

Kenny Chaffin (kennychaffin) | 96 comments Well Heck, I suppose that one (Golden Compass) is fantasy as well....so forget that....

I'll just stand by and see what others come up with....

two strikes and I'm out. :)

“Gideon” Dave Newell (scifikindle) I'd like to read something from Lois Mcmaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga. Probably start at book one, whatever that is... Worthwhile?

Ok, I'll look for something else more Sci-Fi.

Athena Shardbearer | 12 comments Ok, I nominate Beyond Apollo Beyond Apollo by Barry N. Malzberg

message 13: by Donna Sanders (new)

Donna Sanders | 13 comments Map of time by Felix j palma

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

@Kenny

Why did you delete Dhalgren? The author is eligible as it has been more than 12 months since the group read a book by him. The Golden Compass is fantasy.

Geoff, turn my second of Dhalgren into a nomination if there is no other reason to disqualify it.

message 15: by Clare (new)

Clare O'Beara | 77 comments I've got a few of Elizabeth Moon's books in the Serrano Legacy series on my TBR shelf.
'Hunting Party' I think is the first. A very good place to start.

message 16: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K It is much to my chagrin that I have never read Stranger in a Strange Land, so I will nominate it here.

message 17: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnahr) I'll nominate Ancillary Justice. I know it's fairly new but it's been on my TBR pile for awhile and it's got a lot of buzz at the moment. I was looking at it again this week and found it for $1.99 for the Kindle. I don't know if that's a sale or the normal price but I grabbed it.

I agree this looks more like fantasy than Sci Fi but thanks for bringing this to notice Clare - read the review and will have to add it to my to-read list^^

message 19: by Donna (new)

Donna (donnahr) @Greg: Kenny deleted Dhalgren because the guidelines were books you haven't read and it was a re-read for him.

@SciFI Kindle: We read the first book in the Vorkosigan saga, Shards of Honour, in October 2013. It's one of my favorite series though so I highly recommend it although the first couple of books have a slightly different focus than the rest.

message 20: by MarkP (new)

MarkP I'll nominate 'The Player of Games' by Iain M Banks. Been meaning to read it for yonks.

message 21: by MarkP (new)

MarkP Maggie wrote: "It is much to my chagrin that I have never read Stranger in a Strange Land, so I will nominate it here."

I'm ashamed to say I've never got round to reading this classic either so I'll second it.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Ok. I didn't read the fine print. Dhalgren is a reread for me too.

Angélique (MapleBooks) (maplebooks) I'd like to nominate Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg. Available on Kobo and Kindle, and probably in your library :p

Also, I'd like to second Dune. It's definitely a book I've been procrastinating to read.

message 27: by Craig (new)

Craig (craigl) | 7 comments I'll second Dune.I've been meaning to read that for at least 20 years.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

That's a brilliant list so far ... I'm almost afraid to disappear and come back after work. I keep wanting to use my second but better books are appearing. :-)

Angélique (MapleBooks) (maplebooks) Indeed, there is a lot of great books.

[cheating] Dune has been second twice (by Craig and me), can I second Jurassic Park instead?

Seconding Jurassic Park.

message 36: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Huston | 1 comments I've been meaning to read Neuromancer by Williiam Gibson. I'll nominate this

message 37: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy (dbell1) | 4 comments The Dune ebook on Amazon has been blasted for errors. Just an fyi for anyone that's driven nuts by that stuff (like me) :)

message 38: by Ale (last edited Jul 18, 2014 03:38AM) (new)

Ale (wasteofpaint) | 15 comments Well, I haven't read Dhalgren so I'll nominate it!

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

Pat wrote: "I nominate "Enchantment" by Orson Scott Card."

This isn't a bad read at all, but it's really more fantasy ...

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeff wrote: "I've been meaning to read Neuromancer by Williiam Gibson. I'll nominate this"

We read this one January 2013.

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Now that is is nominated, I'll second Dhalgren though it has little chance of winning.

message 42: by Dave (new)

Dave (dcr_writes) | 8 comments Torn between Map of Time and Ancillary Justice - I've read the others that have already been seconded, and about half the rest.

message 43: by William (new)

William Eckman (brukkaros) | 10 comments I've been planning to read The Last Policeman for a while...

message 44: by Richard (new)

Richard Orr | 7 comments I nominate Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. I've been meaning to read it for a while. I've read several of his other books and I like the intricacy of his writing.
