Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments April Cards

There are lots of coloured cards this month and the rest we don't have anything of concern (i.e. no large numbers of 7s or Reverse's again!)

Card Frequency
0 3
1 11
2 9
3 5
4 8
5 9
6 9
7 7
8 8
9 8
Reverse 5
Wild 4
Wild Draw 4 2

Coloured Cards
What a sea of yellow! Holy cow! I have 2 that I know are yellow that I haven't used yet but I'll need to see what numbers they work for and then I'll make sure I get to them in April.

Yellow
1 Yellow
1 Yellow
5 Yellow
6 Yellow
6 Yellow
7 Yellow

Blue
3 Blue
5 Blue
6 Blue
8 Blue
9 Blue

Red
4 Red

Green
5 Green
7 Green

Plus Wild Draw 4 x 2 ; so two coloured cards will need to be duplicated

Tracking Spreadsheet

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Important

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Thursday 1, 2016 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this countdown

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour by using this colour tool. If in doubt, ask me or Apoorv as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hello everyone!

Super excited to be playing with you all this year. There are some new, and some old (or perhaps I should say, familiar?!) faces. ;)

I have sent you all friend requests and will PM you with the link to this thread so hopefully we will see you all soon.

As an intro, I live in Sydney, Aus with my husband and 2 boys (5 and 2) and run a business as a HR consultant. I read almost everything except Horror, and I'm not a massive Romance reader.

I look forward to playing!

P.S Don't forget to create your UNO shelf if you haven't already

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Hello. I also live in Sydney, am a Mum to 3 adult children, do admin for our farming business, also a full time carer for my adult son with Autism, plus a grandma of 3. And in my spare time.. I read, everything and anything and love planning and travelling. Any type of romance is my go to genre although I'm also really fond of doorstopper historical fiction.

Great to be playing with you all.

OMG! Yaaay! Howdy, everybody?
I am Apoorv, and I currently live in Greater Boston Area in Massachusetts, USA. I am on vacation in India as I type this, but I do hope to be back with my routine in MA sometime around mid-January. In the meantime, I should still be around, albeit sporadically, so I apologize in advance, if I am day or two behind.

But, I am sooooo excited for another round of UNO. I simply love this challenge (pretty much why its 4/4 UNO challenges for me now). And literally every challenge has been more fun, more excitement and lovely team members.

I've played in the same team as Sassafrass and Diane before, but this is such a nice new team for me. Makes it even more fun! Excited to interact with all of you!

... and then we have Karen as our captain, who is a wizard-in-disguise! :D

GoodReads is all heart! I love this place so much, that I spend time on here even at work (shhhh! don't tell anyone! :P)

I hope to have loads of fun with this challenge.
So, WELCOME EVERYONE AND IT'S TIME TO HAVE FUN! :D
Yaaaaaay!

Good to see you again Lisa. How are you finding the heat today? get ready for tomorrow it will be a doooooozy

Hey Co-Cap! I don't think we've ever done a challenge together so that is pretty exciting. I hope you're enjoying your holiday. Are you spending time with the family?

I know we still have a few weeks, but I've put a breakdown of our hands into message 6 for everyone. The cards we really need to make sure we cover are the Reverse and Coloured cards as they are pretty specific.
Everything else, provided you give us all the options that the book can count for (Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and # in series) we can track them and manoeuvre things around as required. :)

Hiya Karen! Always great playing UNO in your team. Yes, I've got the air conditioner going flat out and the pool is getting a mighty workout, LOL

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 497 comments Hi everyone!

I'm Sass and I live right outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US.

This is my second time playing UNO and I'm looking forward to it. During the week I'm pretty busy with being a part time Healthcare provider and full time mom (boy 13 and girl 11) and wife (just celebrated 17 years of marriage on 12/23) so I usually get my reading done at the end of the week.

I'm not always able to be chatty but I am always checking in. I'm a die hard romance girl but I read anything. I usually just find a book that will have some romance in it, LOL.

And I'm jealous of you Aussies and your heat. We are just getting over a snowstorm and it's frigid here. Apoorv is lucky because he's in India and missed all the fun. But right now it's 7F (-14C) here. I would so rather be in a heatwave right about now!!!

Teri | 401 comments Hey guys! I'm so excited about this!
I'm Teri, first time UNO player! I live in Virginia (so we, too are freezing our petunias off!) I have 3 kids (14, 13, and 10) and work as a special education teacher's assistant. I love to read anything, I do tend toward romance most of the time, but really as long as its not about politics, I will read it!
So looking forward to this and getting to know you all and chatting books!

I knooooooow! I luckily missed it. When I left The States, around Christmas, it was just about beginning to get crazy, but I was not expecting it to get so bad! I am here in 70F and sweating, in a week I'll be in -10F and freezing! :P

Stay safe and indoors, Sass! From what I am reading and hearing, it's just crazy out there.

message 19: by Sassafrass (new)

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 497 comments Hi Terri,

Since we can't start until 2/1, I'm not sure. I usually just filled it either during the time I'm reading so I don't forget names and such or right after I was done.

OKay, I was just trying to makes lists of books that would fit into the categories, so I wasn't sure if we were doing it on there, but that's for what we actually do read. Got it, thanks!

message 21: by Sassafrass (new)

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 497 comments I'm not a captain, so I'm not exactly sure. We'll see what they say, but last year, they filled out the official Spreadsheet and we had a google doc that we posted our finished books on with all the ways that they fit so that the captains could put them where it was most beneficial.

However, you may want to see if you have books that fit the colored cards. Those can be difficult to fit sometimes. I'm actually going to look at those now. I just remember having to read this awful yellow book last year. I still shudder remembering it. LOL

Okay! Great! And yes, these colored cards are tricky!!!

message 24: by Teri (new)

Teri | 401 comments Okay, not trying to be crazy, but this is what I've got going, so this seems about right? It didn't look like I had access to type anything in the team spreadsheet

FEBRUARY HAND ONE
Card 0 The End of Your Life Book Club ( stand alone)
Card 1 Risky Behavior by L.A. Witt (Book #1 in a series)
Card 1 On Davis Row by N.R. Walker (title starts with O)
Card 3 Cover Up by L.A. Witt (Book 3 in a series)
Card 3 Hex Slayer by Jordan L. Hawk
Reverse Fuel for Fire (read by Lisa (Aussie’s Girl)
Reverse Brighter Than the Sun by Maya Banks (read by Lisa-Aussie’s Girl)

FEBRUARY HAND TWO
Card 3 A Kind of Truth by Lane Hayes (last name starts with H)
Reverse Pipe Dreams by Sarina Bowen (Read by Sassafrass)
Card 8 Falling Down by Eli Easton (E in the author’s name)
Card Draw 2 Don’t really understand this one
Card 6 Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys or A Scanner Darkly
Card 4 Yellow The Killing Hour by Lisa Gardner

message 25: by Sassafrass (last edited Jan 06, 2018 08:34AM) (new)

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 497 comments you can put books down for more than one card, Terri (not sure if you knew that).

For example: the book Pipe Dreams

could go for:
1 (character O'Doul)
3 (third in series)
6 (author Sarina)
8 (character Elsa)
9 (setting New York)
Skip (title P)
Reverse (read by Sassafrass)

so you want to give all the options possible for each book (when you track) so that the captains can use the book in the way most advantageous to us.

Now some of that stuff you won't know until actually reading (like some of the secondary characters) but I was trying to give you a good example and I used that for Uno last year so I know what I used it for. LOL

message 27: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Hello hello hello

As we are a mixed team in terms of locations you'll find half the team on during your night and half during your day ;)

So sorry - I have updated the tracking s/sheet so anyone can edit. So Yes! please go ahead and add in your books you intend to read and how they may fit into the cards.
I've "compared shelves" with everyone for what is on my TBR that is on your read shelf and I've entered those 20 books in so I remember what they are ;)
Sassafrass is perfectly right - unless you are reading for a specific coloured card (or Reverse), it is best to list as many options as possible so we can slot them where they best fit later.

Speaking of coloured cards, YELLOW is the most difficult (I feel your pain Sassafrass - I had a few like that) so any yellow books you have are worth reviewing to see if they match a card.

As a reminder, our coloured cards are:
0 Red
4 Red
7 Red
1 Yellow
4 Yellow
6 Blue
7 Blue
AND we also have to duplicate 3 of them for our Wild Draw 4 cards

message 28: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3767 comments Oh and for Draw 2 - you don't need to read anything. All it means is that we can use one book for 2 cards.
So for hand 2, we have 2xReverse which is why I figure we will use our Draw 2 to cover those 2. (So reading one book for Reverse will cover both). I hope that makes sense ;)
If you look at the "example" tab on our team spreadsheet it has an example in hand 2 of how draw 2 can be used

message 29: by Sassafrass (new)

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 497 comments Thanks, Karen.

I'm going to snag a few spaces and try to get some options for colors now. The rest I like to just read and then fill in as I go.

Yes I generally put in books that I *know* I will be reading and the rest just as I read them. I'm going to try and see what I can find for the dreaded yellow :o

Welcome Richelle!

It can seem a bit overwhelming, but it is honestly really easy. Main things are to come by to this team thread regularly so we know you are still with us, read books and make notes of what cards they can work for, and if you want to, choose a book that can fit one of our coloured cards.
It makes more sense as we begin :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 1505 comments Can someone check this one for RED for me.. Silver Silence (Psy-Changeling Trinity, #1; Psy-Changeling, #16) by Nalini Singh . It also cover 0 and 7 and not sure about 4 yet.

Yes! 50.2%! woohoo ;)

Also - I've had pone captain respond to the Charley Davidson and say yes to yellow, so I'll just wait for a few others and make sure we get a consensus to be able to use it xD

And as I understand, the colour cards take priority, so I should try to find one of those first.

Welcome!
Please don't worry to much. It is honestly not a difficult challenge :)
If you want to find a book that matches a colour card then feel free, but it isn't compulsory. If you'd rather just read what you'd like to and then we can see where it matches and how to fit it, that is totally fine too.
