Melissa | 1347 comments Important

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Thursday, February 1st at 3am (EST - Eastern Standard Time NA). To see when this is in your time zone, use this countdown

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfinder.com

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour by using this colour tool. If in doubt, ask me, Nicole, or Annalisa as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion

* This is a social challenge, not a competitive one. We'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

*Posting read books in thread:

Melissa | 1347 comments Hi everyone!

Welcome to Team Jupiter :)

My name is Melissa from Pennsylvania and I'm your Captain for this years Uno challenge.

I've played on many different team challenges and Uno is one of my favorite. I've been a co-captain for Uno before and I am looking forward to being a Captain this year.

My favorite genres are fantasy and historical fiction and I typically read between 4 and 6 books a month but usually try to read a little more during challenges.

I hope you all enjoy this challenge! Please ask if you have any questions - that's what we are all here for!! :)

Edit - If you could all post a link to your Uno shelves I would appreciate it!

Edit for myself-
(view spoiler)

Annalisa | 1659 comments Hello everyone,

I'm very excited to be joining team Jupiter.

My name is Annalisa, and I'm from North Carolina. This is my second year playing Uno. This year I'm one of the co-captains for the team so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I read around 9 to 11 books a month depending on length and genre. I normally read historical romance, fantasy, science fiction, and young adult fantasy and science fiction. I'll read pretty much anything except horror though.

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

message 12: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments Hi Annalisa! I'm excited to start this challenge too. Have you ever co-captained before? I've never captained but co-captained a couple times so I look forward to 'working' with you :)

message 13: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I have not co-captained before. Last year I was just a participant. I loved it though.

message 14: by Melissa (last edited Jan 08, 2018 11:15AM) (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments A Book Tracking Spreadsheet has been created to keep track of all books read during Uno. If you have trouble accessing it please let me know. Co-captains, please request rights to edit - everyone else will only be able to view.

We won't be 'claiming' spots to read as I feel that gets a little tricky when someones 'spot' is taken by a quicker reader. It'll be first come first serve and do not worry - ALL books will be used. Everyone's books and effort count so don't ever feel that you are doing too much or too little.

With that being said - we will be claiming the Color Cards and Wild Draw 4 because they are more difficult to find and more specific. However, that will be first come first serve so don't feel bad if your reading for a card that gets taken - I promise your book will be used too! With the new rules we will need multiple books for each color card at times.

message 15: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments I've listed the color cards for February above. Does anyone want to claim one of those? I'll write the name and book choice next to the card so we know who is reading and when they are complete. We have 2 Wild Draw 4 cards for February so that means we will need to read 2 books for 2 of our color cards. Does that make sense?

Melissa | 1347 comments Annalisa wrote: "I have not co-captained before. Last year I was just a participant. I loved it though."

Uno is one of my favorite challenges. Gladiator Games was another favorite of mine. :)

message 17: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I'll have to go through the books I have and see I any of them will work for the color cards. I normally don't read books with yellow covers. Not sure why, but that's how it goes. I'll have to sit down over the next couple days, when I'm not on the phone app, and see what books I want to read will fit the color cards.

message 18: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments I don't typically read books with yellow covers either - it's weird. I have to search through my books and line some up to read as well.

message 19: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sanchez (geminidragonreads) | 13 comments Hi everyone, my name is Nicole and this is the first time to do this challenge.

message 20: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sanchez (geminidragonreads) | 13 comments So we collectively have to finish this hand or we individually have to finish each hand? I feel stupid asking this.

message 21: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sanchez (geminidragonreads) | 13 comments Also do we go by the numbers or colors?

message 22: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sanchez (geminidragonreads) | 13 comments I have a a book I can use for 0 yellow! Sorry I think I've figured it out.

message 23: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments Hi Nicole!

As a team we have to finish all the cards. Each person can read for as many books in a hand as they want. We don't have to read in order but to get points we have to complete each hand in order. The color books have to fit the number and the color. :)

Don't feel stupid LOL This game can be confusing at first but once you start playing you'll figure it out quick :)

Michelle's Empty Nest (mlundy5) | 13 comments Hey team!

My name is Michelle and this is my second time playing UNO. I really enjoyed it last year!

I read a little of everything but maybe more historical fiction and mystery/thrillers than anything else. I typically read about 15 - 20 books a month, but usually increase during these types of challenges.

I'm looking forward to getting to know each of you more as we work through these challenges!

Michelle's Empty Nest (mlundy5) | 13 comments As requested, here is my UNO Shelf. :)

message 26: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 336 comments Hi team! This is my first time playing and I'm still confused, but hopefully by the time we start I'll figure things out. And if not, just tell me what to read! hahahaha

Here is my shelf: uno

message 27: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 336 comments I need the book cover color "hot guy without a shirt on" and I'll be set!!!

message 28: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments Hi Sandy,

Welcome to the team, and no worries about being confused. Last year was my first time playing and it took a little time to figure out. You should pick it up pretty quickly. You can check the color on TinEye. I am on the app currently so I can't do links easily. I did a search and if what you had in quotes was the title of a book I didn't see it. If you can put a link I'll check the color when I'm on my computer next time.

message 29: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 336 comments Sorry - it was a joke!

message 30: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments Hi Michelle and Sandy :) Welcome to the team!

@ Sandy haha Hot guy without a shirt is a great book cover ;) and ask questions if you are confused - that's what we are here for. Like Annalisa said you should pick it up pretty quickly once we start.

message 31: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments Is anyone currently reading anything?

I'm off to a slow start this year but I'm hoping to finish Empire of Storms before the challenge starts.

message 32: by Melissa (last edited Jan 09, 2018 09:03AM) (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments I'll read for the Yellow 9 - Every Last Lie

I need to put a list together of books I would like to read for the challenge so I have some ideas ahead of time that will work and I can pick from. I read most of my books from the library - either the book form or the ebook form - so sometimes I'm limited to what my library has. Putting a list together helps me not forget half the books I want to read when I'm there!

message 33: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I'm the same. I get all my books from the library. Occasionally a friend will loan me a book, but I'm more likely to read it if it comes from the library. I'll be putting together a list of 12 or so books in the next week to pick up for the February cards.

I'm hoping to have some computer time this evening to look for books to fit a few color cards.

I'm currently reading the third book in "The Fitz and The Fool" series by Robin Hobbs. I'm hoping to finish that up in the next week. It's over 800 pages so it's a bit slower than normal. I'm listening to an audiobook, "The Road to Character" by David Brooks. Im also reading an ebook of poetry an a manga series. I generally have a few books I'm reading an listening to at a time. I'm hoping to finish all eight books I have on my currently reading shelf before we start the challenge. It's gotten a bit out of control recently. I'm normally reading two to four books at a time but this is a bit much for me. I'll be dropping the manga and poetry during the challenge because it is hard to ind poetry books that meet the length requirements.

message 34: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments Melissa, I enjoyed Empire of Storms. I just read the newest one, and enjoyed it much more than expected. Sarah J. Maas is becoming a very talented writer. I've enjoyed seeing the new depth of her recent novels.

message 35: by Elena (new)

Elena | 419 comments Hello team! I'm Elena and I live in Maryland, US. Looking forward to meeting everyone! This is my second time playing UNO and I'm happy to play again, had a blast last year!

I read most genres, my favourite are sci fi, fantasy, YA, mystery.

My shelf for the challenge - uno-2018.

I remember those yellow covers *shudders*, we had 5 or 6 of them in a single hand last year, that was a special kind of torture! :D

I agree. I'm really enjoying her writing. I love Chaol and hope he ends up with Aelin but the more I read the less I think that will happen LOL

message 39: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments Hi Elena and Andrea! Welcome to the team :) :)

message 40: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sanchez (geminidragonreads) | 13 comments I'm currently read the The Chronicles of Narnia series. Also I noticed, I'm reading them in publication order and the magicians nephew fits the 6 green. But I'd have to check if it fits the word count.

message 41: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sanchez (geminidragonreads) | 13 comments I have two books in mind that I can read for 0 yellow. I work two jobs so two books per month is often times my max. Unless they are small like the Narnia books, which I'm whizzing through pretty fast.

message 42: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments Here is the link to my uno shelf. Uno-2018

message 43: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments I've read the first 4 books of the Chronicles of Narnia. They are quick reads but enjoyable. I think that is one of those times that I enjoy the movie more than the book though - it doesn't happen very often! lI'll check on the Magician's Nephew for you Nicole. Great! You can read them if you like. We can use a second one for the Wild Draw 4 we have.

Thanks Annalisa!

message 44: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments @Nicole - Word count works for The Magician's Nephew :)

message 45: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments @ Annalisa - I typically only read one book at a time. During challenges I will usually listen to an audio book and read a book because during work I can get usually listen to books fairly quickly. Too many books at the same time and I usually get a little lost and distracted.

message 46: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I typically listening to an audiobook in my car. I try and keep the genres different or read fiction and listen to nonfiction. That helps me keep them straight. I thought I would get lost when I first started it but the stories are all different enough it works for me. It would be like watching 3-9 different TV shows, and lots of people to that.

message 47: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments That's true about the TV shows. I never thought of it like that! Usually when I listen to an audio book it's non-fiction as well. I tend to space out and not pay attention if I listen to a fiction book with a few exceptions. Of Mice and Men was an awesome audio book to listen to - I recommend it if you haven't!

message 48: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments I don't think I've read Of Mice and Men. I'll see if I can find an audiobook of it. Then it can be used as a reverse.

message 49: by Annalisa (new)

Annalisa | 1659 comments Actually might not be long enough. Only 112 pages. If have to check word count when I get home.

message 50: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments It works. I've used it for a challenge before. Word count is 29,000. :)
