Good luck Baz! Your #3 should be easy, not hard! We have hundreds of excellent Aussie authors for you to choose from :) Same answer for your female protag!

I highly recommend Adrian McKinty's Sean Duffy series. He's an Aussie writer born in Ireland and Sean is a policeman solving crimes in Belfast during the troubles of the 1980s so makes for a different background. Superb writing. Also The Dry by Aussie author Jane Harper if you haven't read that.

Awesome, thanks Carolyn! I’ve actually been watching and reading a bit of stuff on the troubles lately and it’s fascinating that it is such a recent history (and in many parts undercurrents of the sentiments still exist).
I’ve travelled around N.I and have some close Northern Irish friends so will definitely add this to my list!

Thanks Brenda, I definitely agree!
It’s all about moving away from the norm as everything I read tends to be dark and disturbing and full of action with folks either chasing or running away from bad guys.
I just started Sense and Sensibility last night so that’s jumping straight out of my usual comfort zone and into the arms of a few strong leading females. I also just found out that Matthew Reilly is Australian, which means I can just wander into the next room and pick an Aussie author up off my bookshelf :)
I think my difficulty in reading Australian novels is that I love a good wintry setting, which Brits and North American novels can achieve so easily.
But as they say variety (or diversity for that matter) is the spice of life :)

Another Aussie is Michael Robotham and he sets his all over. Have a look at this years (end of year) top 10 Aussie authors thread, in which members have nominated their choices. Also the other thread of the same with International. You can also check our Bookshelf which is filled with only Aussie author titles. Browse that and see what you can find :) That's in the top right hand corner of any of the group's pages :)

Baz MW (bazcatt) Hi all

Unfortunately the end of 2017 became a runaway train for me, so I was a little absent and my reading dropped off (I failed my 2017 challenge with flying colours).

This year looks to be another busy one for me unfortunately (I'm starting to think activity rather than rest is for the wicked), so I've set a number of reading goals to be achieved that will help thrust me out of my comfort zone, no doubt cause me a little bit of anguish, but also keep me motivated to keep reading. I reserve the right to add to this if I end up with more time on my hands this year than I have anticipated.

2018 is about diversity and pushing the limits :)

☑ A Classic
☑ A book with a genre other than my usual noir
☑ A book with an author who is neither British nor American (this is a hard one for me)
☑ A non-fiction
☑ A book with a non-white author
☑ A book with a rural setting
☑ A Sci-fi
☑ A book with a female protag that ISN'T written by Cornwell
☑ A book with supernatural themes
☑ A one-word titled book
☑ A book written from 2016 onwards (again, another difficult one for me)!

**UPDATES IN BOLD**

☑ A Classic - Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

☑ A book with a genre other than my usual noir

☑ A book with an author who is neither British nor American (this is a hard one for me) - The Six Sacred Stones by Matthew Reilly

☑ A non-fiction - Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House by Michael Wolff

☑ A book with a non-white author - The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

☑ A book with a rural setting

☑ A Sci-fi

☑ A book with a female protag that ISN'T written by Cornwell - Harvest by Tess Gerritsen

☑ A book with supernatural themes

☑ A one-word titled book - Turbulence by John J. Nance

☑ A book written from 2016 onwards (again, another difficult one for me)
