Ellen | 3511 comments After leaving the LAPD on bad terms, veteran detective Harry Bosch took a job with the San Fernando police department working with that city's cold cases. Although Harry is a volunteer he is often called upon to help the tiny department's officers with current crimes. Bosch accompanies the other detectives to the scene of a double murder where a pharmacist and his newly graduated pharmacist son were gunned down at their workplace. The subsequent investigation leads to a deep-rooted scheme of 'pill mills' and prescription drug abuse. A powerful gang ensnares drug addicts and less-than-ethical doctors to accumulate massive amounts of pills that can be resold on the streets for exorbitant amounts of money. Harry puts his life in danger by going undercover with the addicts.

Meanwhile, a 30-year old murder case that Harry solved has come back to the forefront. A man on death row has hired a high-power attorney to help overturn his murder conviction claiming that Harry planted incriminating evidence. Bosch's past with the LAPD hinder his attempts to prove his innocence and if he is found guilty, not only will he face jail time but all of his other successfully completed cases will become suspect.

This is another great installment of the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly. It did start out a little slow but it sure went quickly once the two scenes were set. This was a great read for my first book of the year.

Judith, you really should! Connelly is one of the best, if not THE best, in this genre. LA comes alive and Harry is a great character. The TV series does the books justice as well!

I love the series, but I've been reading them for over 20 years.
