What's Next? discussion

This is the debut novel of one of my new favorite authors. The story balances maturation of young documentary filmmaker, who wrestles with personal and professional choices, and the juxtaposition of Japanese and American cultural mores. While the storytelling is enjoyable and reminiscent of her later books, the writing and plot development is not yet up to the level she reaches later. The style and ecology themes are also continued in her next novel, “All Over Creation”. Of her three books, "A Tale for the Time Being" remains the best.
