It is time to nominate our AUGUST Book of the Month. Let’s let the fun of a new book and discussion begin.

For this month let’s discuss our favorite FANTASY.

We will be picking from your choices, but one book will be decided by your votes and the second by the moderators. We try to maintain a balance between indie and more mainstream books, and will make sure the final choices reflect the two. If the popular vote is for an indie, then the moderators will choose a mainstream option. If the popular vote is mainstream, then we will chose an indie option.

Please nominate your favorite to our list and we will get the poll up soon. First the ground rules:
- No self-nominations
- The nominations will be open for three days
- Nominations will be listed in a first come first serve manner, with the books with the most nominations heading the list
- Total number of nominations taken for the poll is twenty.
- If you prefer to email me your choices, those will be added at the end of that day’s nominations.

Brodie James | 2 comments The commons:book one:journeyman written by micheal Alan peck he's a good reads author and it's one of the best written books I have read in a long time he deserves it.

message 3: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth SaFleur | 7 comments Hers to Command by Patricia A. Knight is a wonderful erotic romance fantasy. Stellar characters against a unique premise - a sentient planet, Verdantia, which is threatened with extinction. But, the romance saves the day.

message 4: by Emily (new)

Emily D (fallingforya) I nominate The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

It has a mix of fantasy within the real world which is my favorite kind of fantasy.

message 5: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Forster (rebeccaforster) | 36 comments Immortal L.A. by Eric Czuleger. If you like Neil Gaiman you'll like these connected short stories and fantasy history of Los Angeles. Who knew the San Andreas Fault was the portal to hell? Are the Hollywood Hills really a mass grave for angels who fought the escaping demons? Angels, demons, vampires and eight foot wolves roaming a snowed in Los Angeles. Great stuff.

Traci Loudin (traciloudin) | 3 comments The Last Stormlord is awesome. Secondary world fantasy, unique magic system of people who can control aspects of the weather, awesome characters.

message 7: by B. Ross (new)

B. Ross Ashley (brashley46) | 5 comments Elizabeth Moon Crown of Renewal Culmination of the whole Paksennarion's World series. Stuff gets settled to the satisfaction of the reader; life takes strange twists for our favourite Duke, life goes on. Love it. Have loved the whole series.

This book looks interesting, but does not fall within the fantasy theme for the month.

Danielle Tremblay (danielle_t) | 25 comments I suggest this book:
The Troupe by Robert Jackson Bennett The Troupe

Vaudeville: mad, mercenary, dreamy, and absurd, a world of clashing cultures and ferocious showmanship and wickedly delightful deceptions.

But sixteen-year-old pianist George Carole has joined vaudeville for one reason only: to find the man he suspects to be his father, the great Heironomo Silenus. Yet as he chases down his father’s troupe, he begins to understand that their performances are strange even for vaudeville: for wherever they happen to tour, the very nature of the world seems to change

Because there is a secret within Silenus’s show so ancient and dangerous that it has won him many powerful enemies. And it’s not until after he joins them that George realizes the troupe is not simply touring: they are running for their very lives.

And soon, George is as well.
------------------------------
But as long as it's not Lord of the Rings and the alikes, I'll be happy.

Oops! Sorry. I should read the instructions before answering. :(

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment.

Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much.

At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Because every room in this old Los Angeles brownstone has a mystery or two. Mysteries that stretch back over a hundred years. Some of them are in plain sight. Some are behind locked doors. And all together these mysteries could mean the end of Nate and his friends.

Or the end of everything...

Danny Tyran (danny_) | 31 comments This one could be good too:
Immortal by Gene Doucette Immortal by Gene Doucette

“I don’t know how old I am.My earliest memory is something along the lines of fire good, ice bad, so I think I predate written history, but I don’t know by how much. I like to brag that I’ve been there from the beginning, and while this may very well be true, I generally just say it to pick up girls.”

--Adam the Immortal

Surviving sixty thousand years takes cunning and more than a little luck. But in the twenty-first century, Adam confronts new dangers—someone has found out what he is, a demon is after him, and he has run out of places to hide.Worst of all, he has had entirely too much to drink.

Immortal is a first person confessional penned by a man who is immortal, but not invincible. In an artful blending of sci-fi, adventure, fantasy, and humor, IMMORTAL introduces us to a world with vampires, demons and other “magical” creatures, yet a world without actual magic.

At the center of the book is Adam.

“I have been in quite a few tight situations in my long life. One of the first things I learned was if there is going to be a mob panic, don’t be standing between the mob and wherever it is they all want to go. The second thing I learned was, don’t try to run through fire.”

--Adam the Immortal

Adam is a sixty thousand year old man. (Approximately.) He doesn’t age or get sick, but is otherwise entirely capable of being killed. His survival has hinged on an innate ability to adapt, his wits, and a fairly large dollop of luck.He makes for an excellent guide through history . . . when he’s sober.

Immortal is a contemporary fantasy for non-fantasy readers and fantasy enthusiasts alike.

Deborah (brandiec) Gail wrote: "'Midnight Riot' by Ben Aaronovitch. I love this Rivers of London series. Magic, gods, goddesses, dry British Humor, introspective, smart, Urban Fantasy. Ben Aaronovitch writer for Dr Who. His River..."

I second this one.

message 13: by Renee (new)

Renee Emami | 2 comments The Darkness of the Womb by Rich Knight is a fantasy horror story that takes horrors that we live with and turns them into a fantasy universe. The love for an unborn child that is felt by his parents is the saving grace in this story that allows the misery to be revised by joy. A great book and I strongly recommend it for this months Fantasy Favorite. Rich Knight inteligencia artificial by Rich Knight
