Definitely a science book.
It is the summer of 1950. Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce discovers a dead bird on their doorstep with a stamp impaled on its beak, the sight of which upsets her father. Later that evening she secretly witnesses an argument between her father and a red-haired man. Hours later she finds the red-haired man lying in the garden and watches as he promptly breathes his last. When the police Inspector refuses to let her watch as they conduct their processing of the body, our intrepid aspiring chemist with a passion for poisons is determined to solve the mystery herself before the police do.
I started this in 2012 but dropped it after a few chapters. I did not like Flavia, I found the premise a bit ludicrous. However, after reading book 4 of the series for several challenges and enjoying it to my surprise, I decided to give book 1 another chance. I'm glad I did, because once the story got rolling I finally got into it, and the events at the end got quite exciting. I think I'll be able to handle Flavia in small doses.
