Sarah | 180 comments ALL about UNO:

All about the UNO Team Challenge

About this team challenge:

โ—ˆ This is a 3 month team challenge starting /b>1 February 2018

โ—ˆ At the end of the challenge 30 April 2018 the team with the most points wins!

โ—ˆ At the start of each month each team is given a minimum 13 hands of 7 "UNO" cards

โ—ˆ The idea is to "play" each hand for points. It is up to the team how many "hands" they can get through in the month, but they must play one hand completely before being able to get points for the next

โ—ˆ The team can choose to skip an entire hand to get to the next one, but they are not given a replacement hand. (You can only skip one hand in a month)

UNO Cards
From Wikipedia
The deck consists of 108 cards, of which there are twenty-five of each color (red, green, blue, and yellow), each color having two of each rank except zero. The ranks in each color are zero to nine, "Skip", "Draw Two" and "Reverse" (the last three of these being classified as "action cards"). In addition, the deck contains four each of "Wild" and "Wild Draw Four" cards.

Sarah | 180 comments Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Thursday February 1, 2018 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this COUNTDOWN.

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Children's book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour by using this COLOR TOOL. If in doubt, just ask.

* Bearing in mind that some of us are more competitive than others, of course we'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Sarah | 180 comments Hi team! My name is Sarah. I am super-excited about another year of Uno! This is my second year participating in Uno, but my first as team captain.

I live in Orlando, Florida and several of my co-workers playfully call me Belle because I'm always walking around with my nose in a book. My favorite books are generally YA and Sci-Fi/Fantasy (Mercedes Lackey, Tamora Pierce, and Gail Carriger are some of my favorites!), but I bookblog and sometimes get some unique ones thrown my way.

I'm excited to get to know all of you over the next couple months!

Trinia | 935 comments Hi Captain Sarah and Team Musca ! :D
This is my second year playing Uno and my second year as co-captain.

I live in Texas. A small rural town SE of Dallas. But I'm originally from Buffalo, NY. I am addicted to AUDIOBOOKS! I always have a book going in my ears and I read Everything! My favorite genres are psychological Thrillers, Mystery, YA, Chick Lit, Contemporary Fiction, Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy.
I like to believe I make a good teammate because I will read anything to fit a task :D

Can't wait to get to know all of you!

Hi Tina! No worries. I think we all understand how that goes. Feel free to ask any questions. If you click on the link to the spreadsheet at the top of the page, you can get an idea of what types of books we will need to read for February. The big thing right now (i.e.: between now and Feb 1) is to finish any books you might be currently reading, as anything started before Feb 1 can't be used for UNO, even if you finish it after Feb 1.

Omg Trinia! I'm addicted to audiobooks as well. I always have a few on my phone so that whenever I'm walking/driving/etc I can listen to my audiobooks.

Trinia | 935 comments Good Job Tina! the hardest part sometimes is finding the team thread, so you are doing great. No worries about not playing, once the game gets rolling you'll catch on quickly.

Tina Golla (tinagolla) | 26 comments Okay I see we got a six. An example of a book I was wondering about reading is Mother Earth Father Sky by Sue Harrison. I have read this book in like 20 years. Would that book work in this game.

Iโ€™m Rho, this is my first time doing a team challenge. I am super excited because I love to read!!

message 19: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 935 comments @Tina- thatโ€™s correct ! Because of the S in the author it would work for 6. And it might work for another depending on character names.
Just remember to not start reading until after February 1 ;)

Trinia | 935 comments Hi Vanessa!
Nice to meet you :D
Have you played in other challenges? Which ones ?

message 21: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 88 comments Hi Trinia,

I'm currently involved in a couple of challenges in other groups: An A-Z title challenge and a relay race reading challenge.
Last year I took part in the Hogwarts house cup challenge on another group, which was a lot of fun.
How did your team last year approach the UNO challenge?

message 22: by Tina (new)

Tina Golla (tinagolla) | 26 comments Thanks Trini. I will keep that in mind

Treavor G. | 32 comments Hey everyone!

This is my 3rd time around playing Uno. It's always tons of fun!

When I'm not on here, I spend my time split between working in a bookstore and being a book reviewer; so one way or another my life revolves around books!

Looking forward to another great game.

Also shoutout to Trinia. Yeah, we are teammates again!

Having a life that revolves around books sounds like a dream!

On a side note, is the child in your profile picture dressed up like Sully from Monsters Inc?

Tina Golla (tinagolla) | 26 comments I have another question. How does choosing a book work? Do each of us read a book that goes with the hand we are dealt? Or are we each assigned a card or two? I am wondering if I should start a reading list for February going through my books and deciding what I should read according to the hand out team is dealt.

We usually try to find a book to fit our dealt cards.
Definitely look through your to-read list for titles, authors and character names. It's always nice to have a selection to pick out of. Most books fit more than one card and might get rearranged as needed.
Have you looked at our Spreadsheet?
It's at the top of our thread, highlighted as Team Spreadsheet under message number 1.

Tina Golla (tinagolla) | 26 comments Say i want to read Invincible by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I think i can count if for a 5. But could i count it as a 2 be ause it is the 2nd book in the series? If we have a color card red could it also be counted for a red card?

Exactly! The 5 is for the I Title, 2 for second in Series and Red for the cover. Have you used Tineye to check colors? Sometimes you'll need to check (this one is fairly obvious). See Message 6 posted by Sarah. She has everything listed and is super organized!
Any other questions welcome ;D

So... I checked that cover and technically it isn't Red enough. The color tool says the cover is 57% Grey, 15% Brown, 24% Red ... Which means it wouldn't work because it needs to be at least 50% Red.
It's a fun tool, You'll get to know it real well ;)

Anytime Tina ;D I think my favorite part of this game is finding the perfect book to fit!

message 39: by Tina (new)

Tina Golla (tinagolla) | 26 comments Trini
I am finding it fun trying to figure out the books to read according to the rules. This is very different than anything i have tried before.

message 40: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments I find one of the most difficult parts is finding a book that fits the color. What color I THINK is the primary hue of a cover is often quite different than what tineye says. Frustrating! But I always love trying to figure out what to read to fit the cards as well. Itโ€™s much easier at the beginning of the month, rather than the end when weโ€™re trying to fill in the holes.

message 41: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 935 comments Thatโ€™s Great Tina ! Itโ€™s also super when it leads you to a book you had no interest in reading but ended up loving :D

message 42: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 935 comments I agree Sarah, so many times I would guess the color fits but tineye says otherwise :/
Canโ€™t wait to get started!!! I got a short list going and tomorrow will play around with some spreadsheet ideas for team tracking.

Karishma (karishmanewar) Hi Team !

I have just joined Goodreads and am very excited for this challenge and to get to know you all.

message 45: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments Welcome Karishma and Angelique (sorry Angelique! I saw your post while I was at work and couldnโ€™t respond!). So glad to have you both here!

message 46: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments Trina and Tina, I totally agree. I love finding new books I wouldnโ€™t normally read. My favorite card is the Reverse card, because I love the challenge of reading something another player has already read, hoping to find something new to fall in love with.

message 47: by Angelique (new)

Angelique | 115 comments Hi again! I have some questions...about the challenge, are the cards for a hand assigned to someone, do we all try to do each card, or do we say, hey I want to do card such and such??

And a Goodreads question for this group...to add a comment, do you have to scroll down to the bottom each time, can you reply directly to another comment??
I have been using Goodreads for years, but not too much as part of a group.

Thanks for your patience!

message 48: by Leah (last edited Jan 24, 2018 03:00PM) (new)

Leah (astratlife) | 186 comments Hi Angelique,

No worries ask away...

First off there is a link at the top of the page " post a comment ยป " just under the team name which will bring you down to the comment box.

I would suggest that you choose your books being mindful of which cards it would work for...

A Princess of Mars (Barsoom, #1) by Edgar Rice Burroughs
A Princess of Mars

Read 2/5/2017

Fits
1 (One)
book 1 in a series: (Barsoom #1)
2 (Two)
character with a surname starting with T: Dejah Thoris
6 (Six)
character with a name starting with S: Sola
8 (Eight)
author first name or surname starts with E: Edgar
Skip
title starting with K or P: A Princess of Mars

----JUST A QUICK EXAMPLE ----

message 49: by Trinia (new)

Trinia | 935 comments @Angelique - you can basically comment on any page and the comment will automatically get put as the last message.

As far as deciding who reads for which card and such , we (cap & co-caps) might have to discuss how we want to handle that.
Donโ€™t panic just yet, there are so many cards that initially itโ€™s not a problem. It gets her when we have only a few spots open. Then you have to definitely pick a book for that slot.
