Romance Audiobooks discussion

One of our new members, Kym, asked this question in our introduction thread. I'm opening this thread for those times you are searching for a particular type of romance and want recommendations from other members.

Here's Kym's question:
Romance is always on my list, regardless of what else I'm into. I have hundreds of romance audiobooks, most in historical (and most of those are regency, though I would like to find some good Victorian era romance titles. Suggestions?).

Hello, Kym! I wonder if you've read (listened to) the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters? Although they are not strictly romance, the relationship between Emerson and Amelia is wonderful. I like the versions read by Barbara Rosenblat best.The first book is

Grace Burrowes' series set in Victorian Scotland is excellent - there are three full length novels and a novella to get stuck into, all of them expertly narrated by Roger Hampton.

I also enjoyed Victoria Alexander's , which is read by Michael Page, and is set in the 1880s or 90s. There are two other audios in the series - What Happens At Christmas and The Scandalous Adventures of the Sister of the Bride. Both have different narrators. I haven't listened to either of those, but I did enjoy the print version of What Happens at Christmas.

Oh - and if you haven't already listened to Loretta Chase's Dressmakers series, narrated by the awesome Kate Reading (which are set just before the Victorian era), then you're missing a treat!

The Mackenzie series by Jennifer Ashley are set in the Victorian Era and I love them all.

I would definitely look at Lisa Kleypas' series ie: The Wallflowers series(most notably Devil in Winter- a classic), The Hathaways series, The Gamblers series (especially Dreaming of You) and The Bow Street Runners series. All are, I believe, narrated by Rosalind Landor. Kleypas really is among the best.
Courtney Milan's er...anything, The Turner series, and the Brothers Sinister series ( start with novella The Governess Affair). Anything, really.
Judith Ivory's The Indiscretion, and Beast, both narrated by the terrific Barbara Rosenblat.
Laura Kinsale's The Shadow and the Star, narrated by Nicholas Boulton.
Charlotte Featherstone's Sinful
Sarah MacLean's Rules of Scoundrels series and Love By Numbers series.
Sherry Thomas- Private Arrangements
Cecilia Grant- A Lady Awakened (hard to tell if this is Victorian)
And if you want some steampunk Victorian, try The Iron Seas series by Meljean Brook, especially The Iron Duke narrated by Faye Adele.

I think Kinsale/Boulton are fantastic, Dawn. I couldn't agree more! I think that the Shadow and the Star is the only one on audiobook that is in the Victorian period. I would sneak her other books in anyway, Kym.

Lol, I thought of that. I am doing a re-listen of Flowers from the Storm, but I don't think they ever refer to the period.

I know. It is really hard to tell.

If you like mystery and a series that follows characters, Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Gray series is very good. Books include Silent in the Grave; Silent in the Sanctuary, Silent on the Moor, Dark Road to Darjeeling, The Dark Enquiry. Another good series that has mystery and some romance is the Lady Emily series by Tasha Alexander. Both of these are definitely in the Victorian period.

Thank you for all the wonderful suggestions! I've listened to many of them, and many are on my re-listen list (I love the MacKenzie series, especially the first with [sigh] Ian). I've made a note of those I haven't listened to yet. I still have 16 credits at Audible. :) I've bought several of the whispersync deals, and will look for your suggestions there first. I like those deals because when you buy the Kindle, then the audio, it's usually about the same or even less than the cost of a member credit at Audible. I have a book addiction issue, but I'm not willing to go to any 12 step program! :)

Regarding Laura Kinsale, I have some of her books on audio. Not all of them, but I'm waiting to see what's next. My favorite is My Sweet Folly, to which I have listened several times. I love Nicholas Boulton's performance, don't you?

My Sweet Folly is one of my favorites as well, but my absolute fave has to be Flowers from the Storm. Mostly because of how awesome Nicholas Boulton was with the speech impediments. Oh, and it is set in the Georgian Era. Have fun spending those credits.
