What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I remember very vague details about this novel, but I believe the author was male. I distinctly remember the main character having a dress with cows on it which she was always wearing. Her best friend moves away, gets a bob and it's "French" looking. She has a complicated relationship with the people in the novel and its a sort of coming-of-age story. The cover of the book was colorful and I believe the title was one word. I read it around 2008-2009.

Appreciate any thoughts on this.

I think this is Girl by Blake Nelson. The girl in it definitely has the cow dress.
