The Greek astronomers could measure latitude as early as the third century BC, but more than 2,000 years passed before the development of a reliable method for measuring longitude. The book did a fantastic job of examining this incredible and amazing accomplishment. I never fully grasped how difficult it must have been for a ship to navigate before longitude could be correctly measured.
This book never got bogged down in the science and I would highly recommend the illustrated version as a gift to lovers of sailing and the sea.
Fantastic read. There are some YouTube videos that show how it had to be done before longitude. Also, look up pictures of the clocks. Very interesting to see their evolution.
