Based upon an 18th century diary of a Polish countess who lived through the Third of May Constitution period (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constit...). This movement attempted to mitigate anarchy, established a dual monarchy with Poland and Lithuania, as well address abuses of the serfs in the feudal system. I felt it was time for an epic, and this one, which the author was inspired to write after a friend of his showed him the diary, fits the bill. It's getting mixed reviews on Goodreads: either superlative or didn't like at all. So we shall see!

This was a quick read because the story was sufficiently interesting and the period in history. I wouldn't count this as an epic masterpiece in the same league as Gone With the Wind, as others have done, but it was well done, and I will now begin the second book in the series:Against a Crimson Sky
