We made it! Share your thoughts on Chapters 16-19 below. What were your ending thoughts? What do you think you'll rate this book? Also, did you read the "About the Characters" section at the end? Any thoughts on that?

I really like the countess. She says things without really stating them. I am glad that Captain Gordon understood what Sophia was saying. I liked his comment "It seems Mr Moray's gloves did fit you well enough. Crazy she really isn't showing at 5 months, I wish I could have said that at 5 months lol

XIII
I Colonel Graeme is a character and kinda reminds me of Jimmy Stuart and Grahams dad. It is funny how he watches her and I think him and the Countess know something was going on between John and Sophia. I think it funny how Jimmy keeps coming to check the coins and she never needs them. I just wish she would tell him, that is Carrie I mean that her and Graham are dating, The relationships definitely coincide with each other. Carrie and Graham, Sophia and John.

OK so went to dentist with my son and wasn't able to comment per chapter. I am up to
Chapter XX well starting that chapter. Alot has happened and loving this story hope to finish tonight. only have about 75 pages to go. Captain Gordon was so sweet he actual saved John because of how he felt for Sophia. I really think John is going to have a new name and hopefully they are going to live a long time.
I still don't understand why Carrie and Graham don't say something to his dad. I feel like he is going to be more upset they didn't say anything rather than upset they are together.

Chapter XX
I don't believe he has really died. I just won't believe it. And to not be able to raise her daughter that is horrible to only see her for a few hours here and there. I understand she is doing it to protect her but now that they are saying Moray is dead will she be able to bring her daughter home. So upset !!!

Chapter XXI

I could just bawl my eyes out. How can she leave her daughter. That is her daughter it isn't like she is in any danger right now. It is the only piece of Moray she has and to leave her. I don't care that it is the only home she knows. I am very angry at Sophia right now. !!

Wendy (wmaresca) Chapter 17

Well finally Stuart knows about Carrie and Graham. Whew. And of course they all think that she shouldn't end the story there. She needs to find someone knew for Sophia and also she needs her daughter to be with her. That is just wrong to leave her daughter with someone else. They both did not die gosh darn't.

Wendy (wmaresca) Chapter 18
not much happens so far she just arrives in Kirkcudbright and one her ancestors takes her around. She sees Sophia's sisters grave and other different areas from Sophia's history.

XXII
Sophia is Kirkcudbright and is hanging in not like being at the Countess's house. I still can't believe she left her daughter. Ugh
OMG I knew it I knew he was going to end up being David. whoop whoop.

I am a little ticked off at the way this book is coming to an ending. They are not going to go get there daughter REALLY, I know it is dangerous but come on that is there daughter. Ugh. I am glad to know that John is alive. And the back story on how he came to be
David McClellend was very interesting.

Wendy (wmaresca) Well I finished it and even read the about the characters part and the thanks to. It was very interesting and especially neat how almost all of the history part of the book was true. I am still not sure I like the fact that they left there daughter but I am glad that they ended up together in the end. I also liked how she kinda of had you wondering about who Graham was related to on him mothers side.

I really really liked this book. That is what is so good about this book club. I read books that I never would have read. This one probably but not any time soon. I am so glad I finally read it and think I would probably enjoy her other books also. May just pick one up to read later in the month.

Thanks again Krista for recommending a wonderful read.

Leslie (nachomammaslibrarian) | 4 comments I finished this book a few days ago and finally have time to write about it. Sorry I wasn't able to post more before.

Anyway, here are my thoughts:

The novel weaves back and forth effortlessly between the past of 1708 and the present. Since I don't generally choose time travel books, I appreciated this a lot. I also loved the atmosphere of Scotland and all the history I learned about the Jacobites and the ousted James Stewart. I did not know a thing about it, so I found myself looking up images of the castle Slains and blueprints and reading about the Jacobites on Wikipedia. I love it when a book encourages further interest.
I had a hard time buying into the genetic ancestral memory stuff which was a big part of the book. I admit to a few eye rolls. I also find the trope of instant falling in love kind of overdone in romance novels. And finally, when Sophia leaves her child behind I lost all respect for her character. I really did not think that was necessary. There was not enough evidence in the book that the child would have been harmed, especially since everyone thought Moray was dead and all the other Jacobites were pretty much forgiven by Queen Anne. Yea, I had to give the book three stars after reading that. Still, I enjoyed reading the book and looked for it in hardcopy...out of print and super expensive. Thanks for including me in your group discussion Krista!
