Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Good idea, Caitie! If I may suggest, edit your post (message 1) so that it contains only the guidance for the thread. Then post again your request, so that you can mark it solved.

And I don't know that book, sorry! :-)

Sera (seracatty) | 14 comments I'm sure you can also do this here in this thread, but I just wanted to point out that there is a group with over 30.000 members which is solely about finding books that people have forgotten the titel (or something like that) of. They might be able to help you if nobody here can.

Megan | 474 comments Sometime in the mid-eighties, I read a book about a teenage boy who goes with his family to live on a colony on the moon and encounters a mind-controlling extra-terrestrial creature that looks like a large, viney flower. It had a sort of golden age sci-fi feel. Have googled and asked in that find a book forum with no luck. Any ideas?

*sj* | 46 comments I'm trying to identify an American novelist who is a woman and writes in a very spare, unforgiving, though observant and human style.

The book of hers I read was about a mother and her son or 2 sons, I think. And I think they ran a restaurant or cafe in a smallish town.

I remember there being a depressive, almost suffocating sense to it, even though it was simultaneously fascinating. A book I loved, even if I didn't exactly enjoy it.

I was trying to recall her name while writing my review of How the Light Gets In, by MJ Hyland, and now it bothering the hell out of me that I can't recall her name, as I feel she is one of those writers who deeply know the craft of writing.

Any suggestions warmly welcomed!

Renee (elenarenee) I wonder if you are thinking of Dinner at the Homesick restaurant. It is similar but not quite what you describe.

BINGO! ... it's been quite a long time since I read it, so I was fairly sketchy on the details ...... I wasn't too hopeful my skant info would be enough for anyone to recognise

thanks so much, Renee :)

Daniel (danintennessee) Wow! I am astounded that Renee was able to zero in on that.

message 8: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I loved the book. That made it easy to remember it.

message 9: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (danintennessee) Okay well perhaps you can help me. I'm looking for this biography that I heard about on NPR within the past 4 years. It's a life of an English noble woman who traveled widely and defied convention. I remember from the interview with the author that the author was related to this subject -although she didn't know the subject personally. The subject had lived in the 19th or 20th century; she had a series of wild adventures and had several lovers. I want to say she traveled in Africa. Anyway, it sounded like a really exciting life story.

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Looks like Out of Africa, by Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen), but probably isn't, because in that case the author is the woman herself and also she is Danish. :-)

Very interesting, anyway.

message 11: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (danintennessee) Sorry no. Thank you Marcos.

message 12: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) It almost sounds like a story about Berly Markam. She was in Africa at the same time as Blixen. The book could be West With the Night.

She was a fascinating woman. Her story was also written as historical fiction about 4 years ago. It was also good. But West with the night is amazing.

I am sorry I cant remember the title of the fictionalized version.

LOL anybody know it? this is the right thread to ask.

message 13: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) West with the Night by Beryl Markham for the link to the classic.

Circling the Sun by Paula McLain is recent.

message 14: by génesis (new)

génesis Hi, I don't think this is a very popular book (I think it's YA) and I don't remember much of it, but maybe someone can help me
It's this book with a group of teens who live in an abandoned building (not sure if it's a post-apocalyptic dystopia or just a very poor country) and some of them take part in illegal car races? There's like a rival gang or something. Also, the leader of the group of teens ends up dating the only girl, who is very fierce and defensive and I think has a little brother...

message 15: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) The Girl Who Owned a City is a popular solution to lost book requests, might fit....

message 16: by Sally (new)

Sally taylor (sallyjanet) | 247 comments The book started out with a girl getting dumped by her fiance,, which took her a minute to get. She got on a plane to go stay with her best friend. My favorite scene was when she was trying to get a job and she went to family planning, thinking it was a job interview and they set her up for an appointment. She was asked how many sexual partners she had,, on and on, and she thought that was odd for a interview, then they wanted her disrobe so the doctor could give her an exam. It was hilarious,, I would love to re read it

message 17: by John (new)

John Lambrechts (johnlambrechts) A 1930s sci fi about a man buried for tens of thousands of years and he wakes up and experiences the world in the future. so good but I forgot!!!

message 18: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) i hope someone finds it John. I love the old sci fi.

message 19: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (danintennessee) I cant place it exactly. It sounds like a plotline from Phillip K. Dick, or this: When the Sleeper Wakes by H.G. Wells

message 20: by Michelle (new)

Michelle | 7 comments Hey everyone! So I read this book years ago. I think it is a true story. It is about an older woman who climbes Mt. Everest. I remember bits and pieces, but I just can't find it. If I remember correctly for a time she held the record for oldest woman to summit, but I have tried looking that up and can't find anything. please help if you can
