Jennifer (bunnyreads) | 23 comments This was a good solid little story. The voice of the assassin was perfect, the length is perfect. I liked the style a lot- it’s clear while not being simple, and there was just enough of a lighter tone to make me like the guy. I also liked that the reason behind the assassination was something that in the end we can justify- though the Assassin doesn’t know when he chooses to follow through with it, it does help me feel like he’s worthier of my liking him. Haha!

One of my GR friends has had a lot of good things to say about The Child of Daystar and now I see there may be some merit behind his praise. I have put off reading it because I don’t always enjoy non-human protags but it looks like I might have to make it fit into a bingo square next year.

I was going to ask if this was a character from CoD but I see you have answered that already. :)

Not that I'm biased or anything, Jennifer, but I do think Raz (the protagonist of Child of the Daystar and the rest of The Wings of War series) might surprise you. Due to the plot of the story, his psychology is largely human, so the voice of the series is something I try very hard to make relatable to most readers.

As I said though... I'm definitely NOOOOOTTT at all biased 0:)

If you end up giving it a shot, be sure to let me know what you think!

So funny you should ask that, because that's exactly what this story is. The protagonist of the story here is actually a variation on the protagonist of the next series I hope to work on! The teacher and the Fool are characters I've fleshed out for that longer plot, so I may have inadvertently written the Fool in a little too comfortably.

As for my style, while genre and dynamics were definitely in what I've come to accept as my comfort zone, writing in the 2st person was SO not. I thoroughly enjoyed it after a bit, but it took some draaaaastic getting used to!

I can see there is no biases at all! LOL :D

Oh I definitely will review if I do read it!

Bryan | 20 comments Another fun read. The pacing really worked on this one, keeping things moving while letting us get inside our assassin's head a bit. Enjoyed the tale and his preparation, even as it all went to hell.

Picked up CoD on a sale not too long ago. May have to move it up my TBR a bit now, though I feel like I'm saying that with each story.

Terrible Timy (queensbookasylum) | 22 comments Reading this after Phil's short story, I was a bit worried, but it was a nice little surprise. This story reminded me a bit of Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy, I liked the writing, the story, how we've got some insight to the MC's head and a bit of his backstory while he plotted his kill. I agree with the Master and the Fool being a bit confusing, but then I liked how the Master handled the situation and encouraged his apprentice in his own way. I would be interested to read more about these characters in the future.

Kathryn (tigrari) | 15 comments Excellent - really liked this read! I like assassin characters and training-type scenes, so this worked well for me. I particularly enjoyed his recounting of his bout with paranoia.

Travis (tctippens) | 21 comments One of my first thoughts with this story was the similarities to Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice: opening with an older character reflecting on their life, the story following an assassin-in-training, and mentor figure known as the Fool.

That's about where the similarities end, though (and they're surface-level, anyways). I loved that this assassin is completely unapologetic about being an assassin. There's no moral dilemma, no evil target that we can justify him killing. The narration style made it impossible to not like the protagonist, and there were quite a few memorable lines for a story this short.

I will definitely be adding the main series to my TBR list! It sounds like the kind of story I would love.
