Luke (korrick) | 2004 comments The Fifth Child, Doris Lessing, 1988, England, NOVEL

Neal Adolph (neal_adolph) | 16 comments I remember reading this one wrapped in my bed sheet, stunned, over a few nights, when I knew my time was better spent doing research for my master's thesis. It was short book, and I thought I had the time to devote to it. I'm glad I did, though. I recall that terror I felt in this book - the way that, despite the cliches in the plot, I was totally alarmed and amazed by the characters.

I admire Lessing's construction of character so much. She reveals, to me - a white man - the breadth and richness of womanhood while also discussing just how many ceilings and walls are in the way of their liberation.
