Dianne Time is flying this year! We have a few more weeks to go with House of Government but I wanted to get your ideas about what type of classic chunkster we should read in april - should we do a themed read (if so, do you have an idea)? Should it be from a particular time period? Once we have set the framework we can discuss nominations - for now we are just deciding what to do.

Nominations:

Jane Eyre: Dianne (Nom) / Christopher, Sarah Anne (Seconds)
Les Mis: Hummingbirder (Nom) / Stephanie (Second)
Charterhouse of Parma: Christopher (Nom) /Roman Clodia, Dianne (Seconds)
Vanity Fair: Stephanie (Nom) / Linda (Second)
Book of Disquiet: Amanda (Nom) / Pamela (Second)

IRT themed read - I never read by theme, so I'm blank on that
IRT time period - it matters not to me.

This is not a nomination, it's just an idea. I know I can't get my juices flowing. I've read it, I enjoyed it, it wasn't what I expected. It was quirky. Like I said, just an idea to get the conversation going. Hope this link works!

Dianne I can leave it wide open as far as noms go if that is preferred.

Is this a link to The Art of Fielding? I haven't read it. However, it would not qualify as a classic chunkster lol

Christopher (Donut) | 81 comments I would suggest either French chunkster (still want CHARTERHOUSE OF PARMA), or, maybe nonfiction or historical classic chunkster. Gibbon, although he may be too chunky, Custine's Letters from Russia, anything like that.
MONT ST MICHEL AND CHARTRES.

I like the french idea! That brings Victor Hugo, Stendhal, Dumas, Balzac, Zola, Perec and Flaubert (not sure if there are flaubert chunksters) all in play. Oooh - even Proust!

message 7: by Dianne (new)

Dianne Any other suggestions or shall we go with French classic chunkster in April?

Paula (paula-j) | 0 comments How about a wild card? People nominate whatever they want?

message 9: by Dianne (new)

Dianne That’s always a good option too Paula! Maybe that’s the safest bet.

Dianne Ok since we don't seem to have a resounding endorsement for themes, let's open up the nominations! You may nominate any one classic chunkster and second another, we will start reading April 1.

The five most seconded nominations will go to poll on Monday, March 5.

Happy nominating!

The Book of Disquiet is hard work - it has moments of brilliance but they are needles in a haystack. Somebody borrowed my copy and I never saw it again...

message 22: by Dianne (new)

Dianne any other nominations or seconds?

message 23: by Dianne (new)

Dianne I will second Charterhouse.
