Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5379 comments H.I.V.E. Higher Institute of Villainous Education
School of Fear
The Mysterious Benedict Society
The Lightning Thief
Diary of a Fairy Godmother
And, of course, You-Know-Who. (Sorry, Harry.) Also the Princess School series, but those are probably too young for you.

Touch of Frost this is set in a school for pupils with elemental (fire, water, earth, wind) type powers.

I'm assuming you've read Vampire Academy right? Vampire Academy

Etiquette & Espionage set in a Steampunkish universe where there are werewolves and vampires and mad scientists, oh my.

School Spirit Although this series might be a bit young for you.

And I can't find the series on my bookshelf (only have 4700+ books on it) but there is another series where the cheerleaders at a special school are really all spies. And how that's the greatest cover, because "no one expects anything from cheerleaders except their obsessing over how good their herkie is" I'm not altogether sure that I spelled that correctly--or even what it IS. (Can you tell I wasn't a cheerleader--and for part of my high school years I attended a school that didn't even have any.)

A Demon's Wrath: Part 1 this is an "undercover" school again, for witches.

Boys that Bite I'm not totally sure that this series is what you are looking for, but, well, vampires and werewolves and fae.

Jessica (jessicalynfox) | 167 comments The Novice
The Inquisition

When blacksmith apprentice Fletcher discovers that he has the ability to summon demons from another world, he travels to Adept Military Academy. There the gifted are trained in the art of summoning. Fletcher is put through grueling training as a battlemage to fight in the Hominum Empire’s war against orcs. He must tread carefully while training alongside children of powerful nobles. The power hungry, those seeking alliances, and the fear of betrayal surround him. Fletcher finds himself caught in the middle of powerful forces, with only his demon Ignatius for help.

As the pieces on the board maneuver for supremacy, Fletcher must decide where his loyalties lie. The fate of an empire is in his hands. The Novice is the first in a trilogy about Fletcher, his demon Ignatius, and the war against the Orcs.

Before the age of 17, the young men and women of Jerar are given a choice — follow tradition, or pursue a trial year in one of the realm’s three war schools to study as a soldier, knight, or mage.

For 15-year-old Ryiah the choice has always been easy. Become a warrior and leave the boring confines of her lowborn life behind. Set to enroll in the School of Knighthood on the eve of her next birthday, plans suddenly shift when her twin brother discovers powers. Hoping that hers will soon follow, she enrolls with Alex at the Academy instead — the realm’s most notorious war school for those with magic.

Yet when she arrives Ry finds herself competing against friend and foe for one of the exalted apprenticeships. Every “first-year” is given a trial year to prove their worth — and no amount of hard work and drive will guarantee them a spot. It seems like everyone is rooting for her to fail — and first and foremost among them Prince Darren, the school prodigy who has done nothing but make life miserable since she arrived.

When an accidental encounter leads Ryiah and Darren to an unlikely friendship she is convinced nothing good will come of it. But the lines become blurred when she begins to improve — and soon she is a key competitor for the faction of Combat… Still, nothing is ever as it seems — and when the world comes crashing down around her, Ry is forced to place faith in the one thing she can believe in — herself. Will it be enough?

A College of Magics

Teenager Faris Nallaneen is the heir to the small northern dukedom of Galazon. Too young still to claim her title, her despotic Uncle Brinker has ruled in her place. Now he demands she be sent to Greenlaw College. For her benefit he insists. To keep me out of the way, more like it!

But Greenlaw is not just any school — as Faris and her new best friend Jane discover. At Greenlaw students major in… magic.

But it’s not all fun and games. When Faris makes an enemy of classmate Menary of Aravill, life could get downright… deadly.

The Hound of Rowan

Max McDaniels lives a quiet life in the suburbs of Chicago, until the day he stumbles upon a mysterious Celtic tapestry. Many strange people are interested in Max and his tapestry. His discovery leads him to Rowan Academy, a secret school where great things await him.

But dark things are waiting, too. When Max learns that priceless artworks and gifted children are disappearing, he finds himself in the crossfire of an ancient struggle between good and evil. To survive, he'll have to rely on a network of agents and mystics, the genius of his roommate, and the frightening power awakening within him.

message 18: by Tris (new)

Tris Crescent | 87 comments This one is middle-grade, but it's still a favorite- Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger. It's the first book in the series, and there are currently six in the series, with number seven set to release in November 2018.
Twelve-year-old Sophie Foster has a secret. She’s a Telepath—someone who hears the thoughts of everyone around her. It’s a talent she’s never known how to explain.

Everything changes the day she meets Fitz, a mysterious boy who appears out of nowhere and also reads minds. She discovers there’s a place she does belong, and that staying with her family will place her in grave danger. In the blink of an eye, Sophie is forced to leave behind everything and start a new life in a place that is vastly different from anything she has ever known.

Sophie has new rules to learn and new skills to master, and not everyone is thrilled that she has come “home.”
There are secrets buried deep in Sophie’s memory—secrets about who she really is and why she was hidden among humans—that other people desperately want. Would even kill for.

Marked by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. This one is the first book in the House of Night series.
After a Vampire Tracker Marks her with a crescent moon on her forehead, 16-year-old Zoey Redbird enters the House of Night and learns that she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess Nyx and has affinities for all five elements: Air, Fire Water, Earth and Spirit. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school’s most elite club, is mis-using her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny – with a little help from her new vampyre friends (or Nerd Herd, as Aphrodite calls them)

The Prophecy of Shadows by Michelle Madow. This is the first book in the Elementals series.
Witches are real. They're descendants of the Greek gods.

Nicole Cassidy is a witch descended from the Greek gods... but she doesn't know it until she moves to a new town and discovers a dangerous world of magic and monsters that she never knew existed.

When the Olympian Comet shoots through the sky for the first time in three thousand years, Nicole and four others -- including mysterious bad-boy Blake -- are gifted with elemental powers. But the comet has another effect -- it opens the portal to another dimension that has imprisoned the Titans for centuries. After an ancient monster escapes, it's up to Nicole and the others to follow a cryptic prophecy in time to save the town... and possibly the world.

The Assassin Game by Kirsty McKay. This one is a standalone novel.
At Cate's isolated boarding school, Killer is more than a game—it’s an elite secret society. Members must avoid being “Killed” during a series of thrilling pranks, and only the Game Master knows who the “Killer” is. When Cate’s finally invited to join the Assassins’ Guild, she know it’s her ticket to finally feeling like she belongs.

But when the game becomes all too real, the school threatens to shut it down. Cate will do anything to keep playing and save the Guild. But can she find the real assassin before she’s the next target?

RoseBlood by A.G. Howard. This one is also a standalone novel.
In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.

At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known.

Possibly Perfect Cover? (If not, I'll add it to the list anyway! Ridiculous and totally delightful.)

While I'm at it:
Model Spy
Grave Mercy (convent, not school)
My School Is a Spy Factory
Spy High Mission One
Desert Dark
Fallen
Breaking
Flunked
Lost in Thought
Knightley Academy

In the first book the main character doesn't go to school at all, but the other books have him going to a school that seems normal but is definitely not. J. (mamalaoshi) | 56 comments I just finished a great book (newly published) that fits your description- A Problematic Paradox by Eliot Sappingfield. A girl (beyond genius) ends up in secret school after her dad is kidnapped by some strange creatures (a cross between aliens and fairies). The school is so cool- they have classes on things like how to build a wormhole and Practical Quantum Mechanics.

OK: Morgan, the main character, does not actually attend the College of Caithnaird during the time period that the story takes place, because he has already graduated, though he goes back to visit several times through out the books.
They are really good books so I thought I would throw them into the list!
