Kylie Jude (kyliekerosene) | 46 comments As they stepped out onto the soft ground of a new planet, the only two people left of what had once been a five-person crew, time seemed to slow to a crawl. They gazed in awe at a new skyline - a swirling sea of bright green and orange, flanked by two moons, and raining tiny sparks of fire.

But they didn't have time to enjoy the view for long.

For it was time that had brought them here...

Stephen Pearl (stephenp11) | 10 comments "Sue, do you see any of them?" Dan focused his gaze on the ground.

"No, but we haven't even set the traps yet. Stick to procedure. Environmental suit final check." Sue focused on the heads-up display on her helmet's visor.

Dan walked around his commander examining the baggy, grey outfit that encased her finishing with the helmet that enclosed her head. "Looks good."

"Monitors show green. Your turn." Sue inspected her young colleague's suit. 'Nice buns,' she thought as she used the inspection as an excuse to pat down his lower body. He was exactly the type she and Jenny would share as a treat. Toned and too young and immature to threaten the emotional stability of their marriage. A wave of melancholy swept over her at the thought of the wife she'd never see again. 'Susan focus. No point in morning someone who won't even be born for another fifteen years.'
"Your suit checks," she said aloud.

J.I. Rogers (j_i_rogers) | 10 comments "Thanks," Dan muttered as adjusted his visor. He scanned the horizon. "What'll we do if they don't respond to the pheromone bait? They've had over ten hours to dig in; some of them may have sprouted."

"They'll respond. Don't worry; even if some have found a place to grow, they're still vulnerable." Sue's frown belied her confident tone. Her expression darkened as she charted their path. "Besides, if all else fails, we can burn them out."

Kylie Jude (kyliekerosene) | 46 comments "Sue!"

Turning in his direction, Sue spotted Dan arching backwards as something pulled him down.

"I think they've responded! A little help!?"

Sue moved swiftly, aiming her gun at the ground, and through the crosshairs she noticed the plant-like creature, green and spindly, its octopus-like tentacles wrapped around Dan's arms and neck as he fought to breathe. He flailed and struggled to stay on his feet, no doubt aware of the fact that Sue had a better shot before he hit the ground. That, and the moment he hit the ground, he would become lunch.

Just before she pulled the trigger, Sue noticed something on one of the creature's tentacles - a small light, flashing on and off in an eerie hue of deep red - it looked like a tracker.

She didn't have time for this. She exhaled and pulled the trigger.

Dan was on the ground. Had she hit him? Had the creature pulled him down before she'd had the chance to fire?

Hating the dread she felt at his potential demise, she rushed to his side...
