Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) I thought it would be fun to post 2-4 book related questions every month that relate to our theme and or genre. And possibly even what our books of the month are. Feel free to share you thoughts and opinions on any or all of the questions for the month.

Fantasy

If you could be transported to any fantasy book world/setting which would you choose and why?

One of our BotM is the first in a YA fantasy series. What is your favorite YA fantasy book and/or series?

The other is heavily focused on Mythology. Which real world or fictional mythology do you find most fascinating?

Angela (love2sing13) | 4 comments My favorite series is definitely Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard! And the world would be Doon!!

1) At the moment, I'd go into the world of Garth Nyx' Abhorsen-world.

2) Definitely "Lockwood & Co." by Jonathan Stroud.

3) I really can't pick: Norse, Celtic or Slawic. ^^'

And as for super powers, I'd like to either be able to become invisible, or to have an "aura" that would force people to keep a polite distance which I could shrink and extend in radius :-D

That second super power sounds interesting. I would be interested in something like that

Thriller & Suspense

1. Do you prefer the slow building tension of suspense or the fast paced action of thrillers?

2. Who is your favorite author of our genres this month?

3. Both of our books this month have been adapted to film, have you watched the movie version of either of them? If so what did you think (both on it's own as a movie and also as an adaptation of the book)?

message 9: by Teresa Faliq ☼ (last edited Apr 07, 2018 09:28PM) (new)

Teresa Faliq ☼ (teresa_trilogies) Answer 1: I prefer the fast paced action of thrillers :3

Answer 2: So far, Agatha Christie

Answer 3: I have yet to watch the movies that were adapted from the books. I think I might watch them, but normally I don’t watch movies that have been adapted from books since they normally aren’t very good.. but i think I’ll give these ones a try. Especially “Then they were none” because that seems like it’ll be a great movie!

I personally prefer suspense. I love the slow build and the just constant background tension.

I don't know that I have a favorite author in this genre quite yet.

I haven't but now I kinda want to watch the And then there were none movie.

Valeria (valea22) | 64 comments 1. Personally I like slow building plots and intrigues.

2. Agatha Christie! I've made myself, against my best judgement, add all her books to my TBR to read them in order and the ones I missed, I read a few when I was a kid but randomly and not in English so I'd like to start from scratch.

3. I've not watched the movie of any of them. If I ever find before hand that the movies are based on books I tried to read them first. But I'll be watching them now
Though I have to say Agatha Christie adaptations into movies haven't been never as good as the books the last one "Murder in the Orient Express changed the book too much.
However I have to say the Theater adaptations have been very very good. Last weekend I went for the second time to watch "The Mouse Trap" the play is been running in London for almost 80 years now. If anybody of you is around here I recommend you to watch it!

1. Suspense, I'd say.

2. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, though I'm never quite sure whether he counts, really.

3. Neither read nor watched those. Which is surprising because I read quite a lot of Agatha Christie when I was a teenager.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) Sorry these are late!!

Paranormal

1. Have you ever personally had what you would consider a paranormal experience?

2. What types of paranormal books are your favorite? (for example romance, ghosts, aliens, ect.)

message 14: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 64 comments 1. No, nothing that I'd consider paranormal.

2. As paranirmal creatures go, I'm all for ghosts, werewolves/berserkers/etc. and the fair folk ;-)

Once again I am super late in getting questions posted!!!

1. What is your favorite genre to read?

2. What genre have you always wanted to get into but havent?

3. Is there a particular subject matter or character type that you find yourself drawn to read about and if so why is that?

Again so very sorry for the lateness of these questions!!!

Sci-Fi

I don't like science fiction or fantasy. I've only read one sci-fi book my whole, long life. I think it was by Robert Heinlein (Stranger in a Strange Land). It was popular in the 70's, when I was in high school. Around that time, everyone was reading "The Hobbit" and "Lord of the Rings", but I couldn't get through "The Hobbit" and didn't bother to try "Lord of the Rings". I'm also not interested in any Harry Potter books even though everybody raves about them.

message 18: by S Roberta (new)

S Roberta (srk4cats) | 13 comments I went through my mystery phase one summer when I was about 14 years old. I think I liked Agatha Christie best, but I read other mystery writers, too. Daphne DuMaurier's 'Rebecca' was one I really enjoyed.

message 19: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 64 comments July SciFi

1) I'd like to go to Port Coriol, though it's a moon, strictly speaking.

2) I enjoy social dystopia most when it is focussed around the problems arising from genetic tweaking to create social classes (e.g. Brave New World) or AIs turning truely intelligent so that there is no valid reason to think of them as less than equal. I find the ethical dilemma interesting in both cases, and the high probability of the human race of ending up creating either or both.

3) My first scifi novel as a young teenager was "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind".

Spades being spades....I struggle with sci/fi. I loved it when I was a little tacker but haven't really had much to do with it in a few years.

I did read The War of the Worlds a few months ago and enjoyed it but I think Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep aka Bladerunner killed sci/fi for me something around 1988.

Fictional Planet...maybe the worlds of Cowboy Bebop (anime).

Dystopia...I think Flowertown by S.G. Reding was interesting.

First Sci-Fi...probably Splinter of the Minds Eye or maybe Han Solo's Revenge in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) August 2018
Nonfiction

1. What is a subject you enjoy learning about?

2. What is something you would like to learn more about?

3. This month we have a book about a group of amazing women and the story of a resilient individual. If you could read about anyone who has existed (or is currently living) who would it be. And optionally why?

message 22: by Mystic Orange (new)

Mystic Orange (Rumell) (rkrespectedmember) 1. Everything. Especially science.

2. Everything.

3. I will read it.

Classics

1. What is you favorite book that you read for school?

2. What is a book that you feel everyone should read?

3. Classics stand the test of time, what is a book that has stuck with you long after you read it?

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) October 2018
Horror

1. What is the scariest book you have ever read?

2. Have you seen the movie based on either of our books of the month and if so what are your opinions on how they compare?

3. What type of horror do you enjoy reading most?

message 25: by Valeria (new)

Valeria (valea22) | 64 comments Probably It by SK though Pet Sematary came close.

Ive seen both movies. They don’t compare really there’s the element of horror based in the supernatural. One with ghosts the other by vampires but the plots are quite different.

Supernatural and psychological

message 26: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 64 comments 1. Lovecraft's stories, especially "The Dreams in the Witch house" and "The Shadow over Innsmouth". Lovecraft works mightily for me. o.O

2. I've seen both, and I prefer The Shining because it is far more creepy for me as the evil-doer is a human while the other one felt more like the troubles of being a child vampire. ^^' I can't say I feel they're that comparable.

3. Invisible/indistinct/atmospheric horror. Splatter doesn't really work for me.

Would I be allowed to post some questions for March? (I really suck at February's theme/genre... ^^')

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 64 comments I'll just do this in the usual form*:

March 2019
Fantasy

1) What is your favourite sub-genre of fantasy (e.g. high fantasy, urban fantasy, gaslamp fantasy, steampunk, ...)?

2) Recently female authors have begun to "invade" the adult sector of the genre, slowly but steadily, instead of keeping to the YA-area. Good thing? Bad thing? Is that a thing?

3) What is the genre cliche that gets you (most) up the wall?

*Please excuse any grammatical errors - my lame excuse is that I'm not a native speaker of English.

message 32: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 64 comments I'll just make a start myself:

1) My favourite sub-genre is probably gaslamp fantasy, though I also read my share of urban and high fantasy.

2) I find it a good thing that female authors begin to leave the "just YA fantasy" corner. Especially as the adult genre in my opinion is in great need of credible strong female characters. And, no offence, I've read more convincing male heroes by female writers than the other way around, and also I'm sick of those heroines who in the end always need a hero to save them. *yuck*

3) The "princess who needs saving" always makes me gnash my teeth, as well as the female warrior with basically no character attributes other than hips, buttocks and boobs.

Favorite YA Book/Series: Twilight
Mythology: Ramayan

message 34: by Auntie Terror (new)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 64 comments You could also try the questions for March 2019, while you're at it ;-)

message 35: by D (new)

D Dyer | 66 comments Urban fantasy and steam punk are probably my two favorite sub genres. Though honestly, I like all the things. I probably read more female writers in general than male writers largely because I find that male writers frequently have trouble writing complex female characters. And badly written women make me irritable.
And the two connected tropes that I find most frustrating our instant love and faded saviors. I like characters that make choices. Whether those choices are relationships or fighting for a particular cause.

Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) 1. Grimdark and High Fantasy are my favs

2. lol I love hao you put that. I think it's good that we are getting more adult fantasy written by women authors recognized.

3. instalove, 180 personality shifts for no explainable reason, damsel in distress
