While the book deals with the paranormal, especially vampires, it fell flat for me. It was told in the third person and jumped POVs a bit. That would have been fine, but the characters were flat and 2 dimensional, in my opinion. There was no depth to them, so no growth or character building occurred. If I’m not connected to the characters the story doesn’t hold my attention. At first, one character Mike, had an inner dialogue about ¾ of the way through the book that really bothered me because he was a complete jerk. However, towards the end I began to agree with him & got a couple of internal chuckles. I’m not sure if that was intentional or not, but it made the story a little more bearable since I was starting to lose interest and felt like the situations were close to becoming like the movie Groundhog Day.
The book ended a year later, and I was surprised that no progress had been made between a certain relationship between two of the main characters. If Ms. Leist, hadn’t specifically said it had been a year, I would have assumed only a few weeks or a couple of months had passed based on how all the characters were interacting and living their lives. While some readers will not mind that at all, a good plot is just as essential as good characters who I can relate to or at least connect with.
The plot was interesting but nothing new. I did appreciate that the author expanded the world outside of just vampires, and it sounds like the next book will build upon that. I do believe that Ms. Leist has definite potential to write some future books that I would devour, and I think many readers will enjoy this book.
I don’t want my review to deter anyone else from giving this book a read, it just didn’t capture my attention the way I like when reading. On the plus side, I didn’t notice many grammatical errors or typos, which is a huge plus!! Hopefully the next book will delve farther into the characters and really build that connection between the readers and the world inside the book.
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Book Description: A Florida town turns into a haven for vampires and human vampires.
Linda moves to a seaside town to live a quiet life. She opens a bookstore and makes new friends. Life is simple--that is until the dead body washes up on shore. Linda is horrified to find that dead bodies and disappearing tourists are common for this small town. As soon as the sun sets, the residents and tourists are stalked by dark shadows. But this is only the beginning.
Linda and her friends receive an unsigned invitation to a party at a deserted house. They are pursued through revolving rooms and dangerous traps, barely escaping with their lives. Two of their own remain trapped in the house. Or so they think.
They must embark on a difficult journey, chased by unnatural creatures, not knowing whom to trust, to uncover the one controlling the game and everyone in town. Who are The Dead? Are they humans or vampires? Or a combination of both? Will there be an end to their evil game? Will Linda and Todd find love? Will a second book be needed?
The Dead Game has begun.
