In the book School Days by Robert B. Parker, two teenage boys went into their high school and killed seven people. One boy was caught by the cops and the other fled the scene and no evidence was found that he was the other shooter.
Spenser, a private investigator, was hired by the grandmother of one of the alleged shooters. The grandmother, Mrs. Ellsworth, believes her grandson is innocent even though his partner ratted him out and he confessed himself. There is no proof Jared was the other shooter so his grandmother wants to believe he is innocent until proven guilty.
The book starts out slow because we kind of get a feel of who everyone is as Spenser meets new lawyers and students along the way of proving Jared’s innocence. Spenser realizes as he digs deeper that proving Jared innocent was going to be a lot more difficult than he expected. Spenser knew Jared was guilty but he had to give Mrs. Ellsworth her money’s worth.
Spenser ran into many difficulties along the way. He made many enemies and caused a lot of drama. Spenser did not let anyone step in his way, he was determined to find out every detail about why Jared would want to shoot up the school. As new characters are introduced throughout the book, we learn more about the two school shooters themselves.
When everyone had lost hope, Spenser didn’t. Jared’s parents wanted him to go to prison because they were so ashamed of their son’s actions. Jared himself seemed not to care if he rots in prison or not. But Spenser wouldn’t let this happen. He did everything he could to try and solve the mystery of why two teenage boys, who were not friends, would plan such a horrible crime.
This book was a little difficult to read only because there were so many characters who come into the book. You really have to pay attention to who is who or else it gets confusing. But other than that, I loved the book. There were so many times were I didn’t want to put down the book because you wondered what happens next. The ending is definitely shocking which makes the book that much better.
