I actually read this in the omnibus of Heris Serrano. It's one of Elizabeth Moon's earlier works, and it shows. I loved getting to know the characters, and the world-building was interesting, as was the whole thing about horses and fox-hunting. A fun adventure in a science fiction setting.
But I didn't continue. I started the second book, and it really quickly became political intrigue in an SF setting, which I do not like. And when the 'evil queen' type person was interested, I closed the book.
