Ali Umair I'm in. It will be a reread for me but I'm excited. I loved it the 1st time, I hope it stays the same for the second time around.

Cobygirl517 I read this book last year... It is now one of my favorites of all time. What a beautiful book! I'm glad you guys chose it :)

message 12: by Susy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Susy (susysstories) Read 1 page last night but fell asleep, just too tired. Also reading the PDF on my phone was really straining my eyes....

Clare Snow (claresnow) I read this while back and loved it. I don't have time for a reread, but I'm reading in spirit 😄

Sure!

Susy (susysstories) Liking it so far: the alternating stories of Werner and M-L, going back and forth between 1933 and 1944, it really gives it an extra dimension. Also getting to know their stories from when they were little really helps growing a connection with them. I know nothing about the book (except from it being about 2 kids/youngsters during WWII) so really wondering where it is going (view spoiler).

How is everybody else doing?

message 16: by Susy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Susy (susysstories) So how is everybody doing? After a good start it has been a very slow read for me so far....

Kelly Rose | 44 comments Sorry I'm only a few pages in! I love how it's written so far but man am I a slow reader. I'm going to commit to reading more today I promise!

No need to apologize Kelly! I’m a slow reader myself and with this book I seem to read even slower. Just can’t stay focused, my mind keeps wandering...

Goodness I am the same way. My mind wanders far too much when I read and I never can seem to catch it lol. I'm now reading along with the audio book to help me stay focused.

Clare Snow (claresnow) I read this a while back. Usually I'm a slow reader, but I got it as a Christmas present and I powered through it in a few days. I guess because it was holidays, also I loved it!

message 21: by Susy (new) - rated it 3 stars

Susy (susysstories) I hope to finish it today. Have you finished it yet Christine, Kelly and Ali?

Kelly Rose | 44 comments I'm still working on it, but man am I glad that it was chosen to be read, otherwise I might never have heard of it or read it. I love the depth of personality and feeling in the characters which is shown even very early on in the story. Certain passages tug at my heart strings with their simple beauty. I usually don't find this much joy in a novel unless it's a classic.

How did you like it Susy?

I liked it but not as much as I thought I would. I don't know exactly why. Maybe my expectations were too high after reading all the ravishing reviews. Or maybe it was the writing. I don't know. I just know that my mind kept wandering of and it took me too long to read it. Although the characters were interesting enough, I didn't feel a connection like I did with The Nightingale for example. Still glad I read it though.

I guess I have the advantage of not hearing about it before reading. But I know what you mean. Yes, I love the characters! I know there's only a few days left of May, but I'm still determined to finish soon. I haven't heard of The Nightingale, but the description sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out!

I really liked The Nightingale, and Salt to the Sea was really good as well.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) The book is a lesson on how to encourage a person’s development emotionally and how to help them develop their talents and interests. It demonstrates the right way and the wrong way. If you do it right, you have a smart, emotionally healthy person with empathy, who wants the best for everyone. If you develop a young bright intelligence with punishment, negativity, harshness and dreadful horrors, you will wreck a person.

Diamonds are just dull-looking rocks until they are expertly cut and shined up, or they can be destroyed by hitting them too hard with the cutting instruments. They glow and sparkle when the right kind of light is turned on them, but they lose their sparkle if the wrong light is shining on them. No diamond can sparkle without a light source from the outside. Diamonds do not have a light source inside of them, someone has to shine on them to make them sparkle.

It is a terrific symbol. I loved this book. There are a lot of multi-dimensional meanings in the plot.

bless you | 1 comments This book was really good. I enjoyed it a lot

Yes, I will!
First week of September :)
After the Sprint.

Kelly Rose | 44 comments I started it in May but only finished it early August haha, but it was really good; just had to keep taking breaks because it was so breathtakingly horrid and beautiful at the same time. And, oh, how it broke my heart. I only wish the "Berlin" subchapter was taken out of the book or that I had skipped it, then it would be perfect.

@Kelly, glad you loved it. What's so bad about the Berlin subchapter?

Kelly Rose | 44 comments Aqsa wrote: "@Kelly, glad you loved it. What's so bad about the Berlin subchapter?"

I don't want to spoil anything, but what happens in it just feels wrong, like it invaded the innocent tone of the book and that a certain thing wouldn't have happened because a certain character would have fought against it.

Too vague, thanks. Sounds like something horrible happened, idk. It disrupted the story.
I'll get to it this month!
