It's funny because I started reading this without even realizing it fit into this month's theme but it's a woman author and certainly has fantasy elements to it.
The book is a page-turner for sure; it’s easy to read and great at building the creepy atmosphere of Sparrow. The curse is incredibly unique and fun to read and speculate about. The main character, Penny, is pretty average, luckily avoiding most of the Mary Sue cliches. The new-boy with a secret trope is strong with this one, making love interest Bo pretty one-dimensional.
My favorite characters were the infamous Swan sisters, murdered two centuries ago and destined to come back as killer femme fatales. I felt the end of the book to be a bit rushed and incomplete and there was a major twist that I really liked in theory but thought was poorly executed. All in all, The Wicked Deep is a stand-out from most of the supernatural teen tales being churned out these days. Despite its flaws, this is a story that is worth reading. 3.5 stars
