Snynopsis

Hello everyone!
this is my first buddy read in this group!

So, looking at the book - looks like we don't have chapters numbers. Yikes

a few chapters do have dates
and there are "Parts" to the book - but they are pretty few and far between..

Do we want to post based on Chapter dates (so we don't spoil things for each other? )

That sounds like a good idea, Trisha. :) I'm really glad you joined us and I think you'll find this group to be very fun! This is also my first buddy read with this group and I believe it will be Morgan's too.

I'll be reading for Team Hermione Granger for points and so will Morgan.

How about approximately every 50 pages or so? If that works, I'll post the pages in my book as well as the dates to start/stop and hopefully discuss our thoughts after each section. Is that doable?

Trisha, I think the 2 quotes you pulled out were 2 really good ones. I especially like, "It just seems like a bad idea...swallowing a liquid that can be set on fire."

Paul (view spoiler)[ I can't imagine how I would feel if I were in a band and I was offered that kind of money but I had to "go solo." I admire Paul for not taking the money and signing the contract; however, I think to make it in Hollywood (or wherever) that one probably has to be prepared to do just that. (hide spoiler)]

Eliza (view spoiler)[ seems to do pretty well standing on her own two feet. I'm glad that Terry made it clear that he hired her base on her own merits and her article, not because of Doug Blackwell. (hide spoiler)]

They need attention! I'm glad he shared with Eliza that he also that he had also thought of killing himself. Vera (view spoiler)[has really been selfless by supporting Michael while he chased his dream, but I see her point of view. I think Michael needs to step up to the plate and at least share her dream by working and bringing in more money so she can pursue her dream too. (hide spoiler)]

Discussion Points

First Stop: Before July 25, 2000 (50 pages)
Plot wise, music being the backbone of this story has been a major plus so far. It makes the backdrop of Eliza's story (thus far) very interesting, and I certainly hope that we get to learn a bit about the music business and the workings behind the scene, as much we'd get to know the love story.

Story wise, so far I am definitely hooked on to the proceedings and characters seem definitely interesting. The setting of New York City works nicely with the kind of story, so so far so good, Ms. DeBartolo.

Eliza - (view spoiler)[I like that she has her flaws, her insecurities, her challenges; and yet she is trying to work her way out of it. I liked how she reacted during her encounter with Doug, and how she just didn't succumb to her fascination about him. Hopefully, she goes from strength to strength and comes out as a strongly-written character. I have hopes! (hide spoiler)]

Paul - (view spoiler)[Boy, is he a character! I don't necessarily know what to make of him just yet, but I am definitely keen on understanding where he comes for. He showed definite character in refusing the offer to go solo (for now), but I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually accepts it. I would just be looking out for a decent, valid, logical reason when that happens. (hide spoiler)]

Michael Caelum - (view spoiler)[So far, my favourite character. He is such an adorable brother, from the looks of it. I would hate to see him give up on his dreams, but with Vera he seems to make a lovely team. More strength to them. I hope Paul takes him along with him, when he goes solo. (hide spoiler)]

Eliza's job situation is certainly interesting. But, there have been lots of books written with similar situations, so to positively standout, it has to either make me laugh (which Lucy and her bitchiness can certainly do) or make things intensely dramatic to push the narrative ahead.

You threw me off when I came to this thread because I didn't realize anyone else was joining us. But the more the merrier.

I am ambivalent regarding Michael at this time, but I do like him overall. I just think he is (view spoiler)[selfish for wanting to continue to pursue his dream without taking his wife's dreams and aspirations into consideration. She's supported him and now it's time for him to support her. (hide spoiler)]

I do think that Paul will (view spoiler)[go solo eventually because I've seen MANY bands break up because one singer is wanted but the other band members "aren't good enough." (hide spoiler)]

Did you guys by any chance see I Can Only Imagine? That was a really good movie about a Christian band and their roots and how they made it. The way the lead singer handled things is(view spoiler)[ how I'd like to see Paul handle it if he's offered to go solo more. (hide spoiler)]

I don't know if the book gets better because I've only read up to pg. 98 and I liked it so far. I just am not swept away by it. LOL

3rd post: stop AT Part II (@ 150 pages)

I don't know how I feel about everything at this point. I think this section really sets up (view spoiler)[what it's like when "Hollywood" gets hold of you, so to speak. Paul seems like he's in some ways no longer himself. He's told where he'll go, what he'll do, etc. I think that people's biggest fear of following their dreams to stardom is that it will change the very essence of who they are. (hide spoiler)]

I loved it when (view spoiler)[Paul surprised Eliza with a song he'd written just for her. Who wouldn't love that coming from their significant other! (hide spoiler)]

Eliza (view spoiler)[will miss out on a lot in life if she doesn't trust more. I was kind of sad for Paul that she wouldn't go to CA with him and be there with him on his journey. I got a bit confused because in his journey he said she wouldn't go, but then she was at the party where they met Loring, so did I miss something? (hide spoiler)]

Loring (view spoiler)[ I thought it was funny when he admitted to Eliza that he knew who she was and so much as called her a stalker. LOL She must've been so embarrassed. (hide spoiler)]

Just starting this but see that Part Two is titled Everything Is a Complete Disappointment, which is very telling or so it seems.

Oh no he didn't! (view spoiler)[Loring hit on Paul's fiancee? What the heck! He seemed like he was going to do the "right" thing and not "cross her path" but he managed to get that interview. LOL (hide spoiler)]

I feel bad for (view spoiler)[Loring that his father never really was proud of him for his number one records. I never understood parents that don't support their children in THEIR dreams! (hide spoiler)]

I like that (view spoiler)[Loring isn't full of himself or obsessed with himself, but I think I see trouble brewing for Paul and Eliza. She already feels like he's too worried about every little thing as he moves forward. I get the feeling she's not much too happy with how things might be changing him. (hide spoiler)]

IT (view spoiler)[factor is I don't know what except I guess stars have IT. Lol I find it interesting that Loring is doggone good looking, women want him and are too forward with him, and yet he says HE doesn't have IT, but Paul does. Interesting. (hide spoiler)]

Forgot to mention that I don't like (view spoiler)[Lucy or anyone who cares more about money than people! I was upset that she forced Eliza to basically betray Loring. (hide spoiler)]

And Eliza calls Paul (view spoiler)[the "savior" and Doug comments that she thinks Paul is "the Second Coming," which to me would mean she likens him to Christ. (hide spoiler)]

The fact that Eliza is willing to (view spoiler)[promise to go on a plane with Paul tells me a lot about how she feels about Loring. (hide spoiler)]

The funniest scene so far to me is when Paul and Eliza and Vera and Michael all were (view spoiler)[with Loring and they had that conversation about the last time they all had sex. I was in stitches. LOL But I did think that Vera was out of line getting all up on Loring''s neck and asking him about sex. She's a married woman! (hide spoiler)]

Paul and Eliza (view spoiler)[are growing apart, I think. If Paul is feeling like she is spending more time with Loring than with him, then she's most likely spending way too much time with a "friend." (hide spoiler)]

The dinner (view spoiler)[ that Eliza and Loring spend is supposed to be his "good bye" dinner. It seems to me they just keep growing in their relationship in ways that she and Paul don't. They communicate! (hide spoiler)]

A Thousand Ways (view spoiler)[was very romantic but wow! He is in love with Eliza and now Paul knows it. (hide spoiler)]

I seriously can't believe that (view spoiler)[Eliza kissed Loring if she doesn't care for him in a romantic way. That is not the way to go about making someone do something like go on a tour! She's ridiculous! (hide spoiler)]

Second Stop

Ugh! This book is bothering me more and more now. Especially the (view spoiler)[insta-love between Paul and Eliza. I was hoping to see Eliza have a more gradual curve with respect to her feelings of Paul, but this is just too rapid switching for my taste. While I personally LOVE a slow-burn, I am not averse to insta-love IFF there is a progressive curve emotionally. (hide spoiler)]

More so, the guarded and grounded Eliza, (view spoiler)[suddenly seems frivolous (hide spoiler)] and the playboy Paul (view spoiler)[suddenly has more gravitas. (hide spoiler)] You cant just write stuff to randomly please the readers (if you think showing spectrum of a personality will make the audience believe in the characters).

Anyway, I loved the scene (view spoiler)[at the elder's home and their conversation atop the building overlooking Manhattan. (hide spoiler)] Some salvageable moments for sure.

For me the book did get better.

It was so obvious that (view spoiler)[Loring and Eliza were going to hook up. I can't believe how stupid she was to purposely use him and kiss him so Paul would see. I hate mind games & I had a hard time finding so much of the characters' actions. (hide spoiler)]

I was pretty sure (view spoiler)[ Paul was alive because they did not find a body, but then they found one. Lol As soon as Eliza was reading the autopsy report about the tattoos, I had no doubt anymore. I really thought his fake death was ludicrous & that Michael knew & could put his sister through that is disturbing. But since it ended the way it did, I was glad Eliza got on the plane and Paul was there so she didn't have to fly alone. (hide spoiler)]

So far, this book has pleasantly surprised me. This isn't my usual genre of choice, so thank you Vicki for encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone with this one.

Paul (view spoiler)[I feel like I shouldn't like him, but I've always been drawn to the bad boy. Haha. There's something about him that doesn't feel very bad at all though, rather just misunderstood. He seems like a very deep-thinking, loyal, and sensitive soul. I love that when he was presented with a record deal for himself sans the band, he refused. That kind of loyalty is hard to find, especially when faced with that much money. Although the foreshadowing is pretty obvious regarding the potential future between Eliza and Paul, I'm still already shipping them pretty hard. Haha. I'm such a softie! (hide spoiler)]

Eliza (view spoiler)[I don't feel like I've gotten to know her enough yet. However, Eliza appears to be a very independent girl. She is dedicated to music and has allowed the lyrics of her beloved artists to shape her soul and who she is as a person. I have a feeling that she is going to be very successful in New York and squash a great deal of stereotypes, especially at her job with that lady who seems to dislike her already. It's clear that she seems to have an equal intrigue when it comes to Paul. I also appreciate her love and admiration for her brother, Michael. The fact that she is so willing to try to help him continue to pursue his musical career, even though she is struggling just as much, shows just how strong their family bonds are. (hide spoiler)]

Michael (brother) (view spoiler)[I don't know enough about him yet, but I do feel bad that it sounds as though his musical career is about to come to an end, based on the "three-year-plan" he created with his girlfriend, Lucy. I hope that something happens for him, so that he doesn't have to abandon his dream. I think in the long run, he would develop a very deep-seated resentment against Lucy if it came to that. Lucy (view spoiler)[She seems to be a bit uptight. I always get a little weary around people who seem incapable or unwilling to get vulnerable with others. It makes me feel like they are hiding something, so I question Lucy's intentions. Eliza would simply ask her what's wrong or how she's doing and she would avoid the question or give a very vague, blank answer. Sketchy. (hide spoiler)]

Trisha, I LOVED those lines too! I especially liked the "Friend of Bill W." reference, because we've been friends for 4.5 years (it'll be 5 years in July!).

Eliza (view spoiler)[I am *swooning* over Eliza and Paul. I love the slow, gradual build of their relationship. The foreshadow is a bit extra, in my opinion. I think it took a bit of the suspense and excitement out of it, considering you knew from the minute they met (take two) at the apartment that they would some sort of romantic entity together. However, I do really love Eliza's character. I think she is very relatable to most young girls/women. She is a little shy, quite humble, dedicated, determined, loyal, funny, and charismatic. She is unapologetically herself, which I always love in female MC. I love the way she allows music to move her soul, because I am the same way--a vault of song lyrics. Though, Eliza takes them to heart, straight to her soul. I envy that. I worry that she will get hurt in this relationship with Paul, based on his previous bad-boy ways, though I hope she doesn't allow that fear to cloud her ability to stay in the moment with him and enjoy their relationship together. Paul (view spoiler)[I do enjoy Paul's character. I enjoy the fact that he is encapsulated by Eliza's character and all the amazing things that make her so lovable and relatable. However, he seems to be a bit clingy and needy at times and that's a bit worrisome, especially since they both have a history of suicide attempts or suicidal ideations. That kind of codependency on another human being can lead you right back down that path. I love his passion for music. I especially love that he did not accept the initial record deal excluding his band members, even though it was a lot of money. That, in and of itself, speaks to his character. The way he loves Eliza is admirable and something to be desired. I can understand why female characters would fall in love with his character. (hide spoiler)]

He seems to be really struggling with having accepted the record deal with Winkle and how it will change him as a person, considering he did NOT want to be the guy answering to record execs. He just wanted to play his music--music that would speak to the souls of others, just as it had done for Eliza and him. I'm concerned that this is going to turn out badly. (hide spoiler)]

I was taken off guard (view spoiler)[by the plot twist with Loring being introduced and suddenly having feelings for Eliza from jump. That seemed a bit unrealistic for me, though I guess that's a bit hypocritical to say, considering that is exactly how Eliza and Paul began and I've been #TeamPaliza all book. Hahaha. Definitely seemed a bit random, but would it really be a good book without a plot twist of that magnitude? (hide spoiler)]

Eliza (view spoiler)[I think Eliza is gonna find herself in hot water really quickly. I am concerned that she is getting in over her head, but her sweet, innocent nature leads to naivety. I do believe she is oblivious to Loring's feelings for her, hence why she is so willing to spend time with him as much as she has. However, in a committed relationship, I can't imagine that one could believe that is entirely normal. I hope she wakes up before it's too late for her and her relationship. (hide spoiler)]

Paul (view spoiler)[has turned into the sweetest guy everrrrr. I love how in love he is with Eliza. He would move Heaven and Earth for her, albeit a bit codepedent, haha. I worry that he did sign his life away by signing up for that new record deal with Winkle, even though it allowed the band members to stay on. He really wrestled with the decision and I'm just afraid that he will lose himself in trying to be who the music execs want him to be, as opposed to continuing to make music that moves the soul. The song he wrote for Eliza though was so sweet. (hide spoiler)]

So, just because your father gave this girl an uncharacteristic interview and has fawned over her ever since, you are in love at first sight? You're going to her FIANCE'S shows for the sole purpose of hoping and praying to see her? Sounds a bit stage-five clinger and stalkerish if you ask me. Granted, I do think that he has great character development. He is desperately trying to make a name for himself outside of his father's enormous reputation, sounds like a good father, and truly wants to find love again. However, leaning on the fiance' of one of your fellow musicians and longtime friend seems rude, disloyal, and disrespectful. I could never *swoon* for that, because I will forever view him as a homewrecker. I appreciate the fact that he has kept his feelings to himself and has not outwardly hit on or made a move on Eliza, but I still think his behavior is inappropriate. It is completely inappropriate to spend that much alone time with someone else's significant other, regardless of the reason. The interview was one thing.
