My reading time nearly ground to a halt during January and February. I finished a single book Red Seas Under Red Skies during these winter months. I wanted to continue with Locke Lamora down the rocky road he has been travelling. My pace of reading the second Gentleman Bastards book was much slower than the first. I'm not sure if this was because I was still upset with things that happened in the first book or if the second book just wasn't quite as compelling for me.
I struggled right along with Jean and Locke as they tried to recover from losing their friends and figure out how to operate efficiently as a pair again. I always enjoy the plotting and planning of a heist, but it felt like our dynamic duo were spread a bit thin in this novel. The experience as a reader was a bit like watching a clumsy tightrope act. I was so afraid of seeing the fateful fall that I had a hard time enjoying the show.
I didn't like Locke and Jean at sea as much as I had hoped. It seems as if this portion of the novel is a set-up for events in future books. Nonetheless, we met some interesting new characters and I still love both Locke and Jean. I thought the Sinspire portions of the book were written beautifully. They painted a vivid picture of gaming and gambling and glamour that I wanted to immerse myself in. I have little doubt that I will continue reading the Gentleman Bastards series and I hope to get a little bit of my reading mojo back with the next installment.
