This story involves two main characters, Hazel and Augustus, who suffer with cancer. Hazel, a girl who carries an oxygen tank with her every day and never wants to go out and meet people, meets Augusts at the support group which is the meeting for kids with cancer. At the meeting they talk together for the first time; they know that they are different from others. However, they have no idea what will happen to them while they are having a good time together.
They understand each other much more than others understand them, and they really need each other. I got that sense very strongly from this book. They become each other’s best supporter, besides their parents. When Gust is in pain at the hospital because of the cancer, he rejected Hazel coming into his room since he does not want her to see him suffering so badly. I thought that Hazel would get angry because that is what usually happens in common stories. I could easily imagine that one character is weeping and begging to see the other. However, Hazel was completely different from what I expected. She knows why he rejects her visit. She understands that she should probably be away from him for a while because that is what she would want him to do if she were suffering with the pain and she is out of mind. She does not get angry or sad, even though she is worried, and she leaves the hospital. This scene is what made me realize that they are true supporters for one another.
Even though this book is sad and I do not like sad stories, I really liked the way the author closed this story. That is because this is not just a tragedy. It really is about how deeply the two people fell in love and how beautiful and sensitive their love is. As this story goes to the end, the language that the author uses effectively tells how much they love each other with a calm tone. It is a quiet tone, but it never reduces the emotion of the characters, but reveals it even more clearly.
