O.J. Simpson is a well known name across America. While some may know him for his football career, most know him for his numerous arrests and controversial criminal past. Including the charges brought on him for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown. Even thought he was found not guilty for her murder, many still believe he was guilty, but got off due to the outstanding work of the “dream team” of lawyers he had. After the very public trial, Simpson decided it would be a good idea to write a book titled, “If I Did It: Confessions of The Killer” in order to tell his side of the story. The book itself was composed of chapters, each one telling the story of a time in Simpson’s life. The book consisted of detailed accounts of Simpson’s life before Brown, Simpson’s and Brown’s life together, and the trial. Simpson had a life before he met Nicole, he had a wife and kids and an amazing football career. Because of his travel schedule, him and his wife eventually got a divorce and moved on from each other. Even after the divorce he still had a relatively normal life where he would go to work (on a private jet) in the morning and come home at night to be with his family. Than he met Nicole and they were both love struck and they moved very quickly in their relationship. Brown and Simpson had what seemed to be the most loving and healthy relationship in the beginning. But then the book goes to show how their relationship deteriorated and became physically abusive from both sides. This book is really powerful in more ways than one. It really makes you think a lot about untreated mental illness and what could happen if an illness goes under treated. While we don’t actually know if Simpson has an illness, it seems clear to me that he does. If he had been diagnosed and treated, Nicole could still be alive, if Simpson is the one that killed them. Another thing this book makes me think about is everyone went through this whole long trial and no one was brought to justice. The Brown family had so much heartache to learn that the person that allegedly killed their daughter wouldn’t be brought to justice. But what would’ve happened if Simpson wasn’t rich? He probably would be in jail. This just goes to show how flawed our judicial system is. In the end l, I really enjoyed reading this book. It was well put together and well written. I did have an extremely hard time reading it. It’s definitely not easy reasoning about an abusive relationship, than a murder, a trial and a suicide note. I don’t know how Simpson was able to get this book published because of how personal it is. It’s easy to tell how much he struggled in his life mentally and physically and to be in the public eye had to of made it harder. Then to publish a book including your suicide note? That’s either extremely brave or just his way of trying to act innocent. As I’m writing this I realize I keep going back and forth with how I feel and to be honest, I don’t know. I can’t decide if I hate this book or if I love it. You’ll just have to read it and decide for yourself.
