The book Stardust by Neil Gaiman is a fantasy book. I’ve read another book called Neverwhere by the same author this book has but Neverwhere’s genre is urban fantasy. I feel like I used to enjoy fantasy books more when I was younger because after reading this book I’ve noticed I’m not a huge fan of fantasy anymore. The characters in this book are Tristran Thorn, Dunstan Thorn, Yvaine (the star), the Witch-Queen, the Hairy Little Man, and Victoria Forester. Although fantasy isn’t my favorite genre, I still liked that this book was about hopeless romance because this is a realistic topic in real life.
This book is about a boy named Dunstan Thorn who lives in a town called Wall. He crossed the wall because he’s told that he’ll meet his heart’s desire. A few months later when he’s already married to a girl in Wall he comes upon a baby in a basket which is Tristran Thorn, Dunstan’s son. As Tristran grows up, he never quite fits in but he develops a huge crush on Victoria Forester, and makes a bid for her hand in marriage or at the least a kiss. They both see a falling star and Victoria says if Tristran gets the fallen star for her then she’ll agree to his bid. On the way to trying to find the star Tristran goes to Wall and meets the Hairy Little Man.He helps him find the star on his journey but the only problem is that the Witch-Queen is also out to find the star the same time Tristran is.
A weakness in the book is the plot in some ways. Especially, whenever there was a chapter about the three Witch’s I lost interest because they weren’t on a journey like Tristran was and I thought it was kind of unnecessary for them to be in a lot of their own chapters since they didn’t encounter any new people or events like Tristran did. On Tristran’s Journey to find the star he met different people and things such as the Little Hairy Man, the Unicorn, the Lion, etc.
I think a strength in this book were the characters the author chose. This is because Tristran grew a lot as a person throughout the book from in the beginning being a weird kid who doesn’t fit in and transforms into a brave hero by the end of the book. An example of this is when the star asks him to break up the fight between the lion and the unicorn, at first he’s afraid, but then he overcomes his fears.
After reading this book I think I appreciated it more after reading it rather than while reading it. I think this is because I didn’t appreciate the theme of the book until afterwards. The theme that I have noticed in the book is that people will do almost anything for love, even if that means trying to find a fallen star.
