I'd like to recommend Marja Verschoor-Meijers' series on the Ten Commandments. I've just finished Spirit of Truth and it stands alone well as a representative of this rock-solid series.

I just finished reading 'Pure in heart' by Susan Rohrer (yeah, our new group moderator). An excellent read and I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to grow in using the spiritual gifts for God's glory.

Though I'm not a pastor, I'm almost finished reading Survive or Thrive: 6 Relationships Every Pastor Needs by Jimmy Dodd. I'd highly recommend this book not only to all pastors, but also anyone in any form of official or lay leadership.

Since October has arrived, I've changed some of the suggested group reads. I've just finished In My Name (which I really enjoyed) and am currently digging into The Essential Guide to Healing (very good so far). I haven't gotten to Boundaries yet. If you're reading along with us on any of the top four current group reads (pictures near the top of the group's homepage, be sure to chime in and let us know what you think. :)

I just finished reading Hero & Friend: My Days with Pistol Pete Maravich by Darrel Campbell. Whether or not you're into sports, this up close and personal look at basketball Hall-of-famer Maravich and his amazing father & coach, Press, is a great read.

Book Recommendation: The Great Divorce

I wondered whether to recommend this book here, since it is an allegory, but the themes it addresses are very real!

If you would like your thinking stretched about the nature of heaven and hell, then this book is for you. Lewis presents an allegory, not attempting to accurately depict, but rather illustrate truths and thoughts about these fundamental Christian concepts. He illustrates, for example, how a person might choose hell over heaven. One quote says, "There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, in the end, "Thy will be done."

As a Christian writer I found this quote a sobering thought, "Every poet and musician and artist, but for Grace, is drawn away from love of the thing he tells, to love of the telling till, down in Deep Hell, they cannot be interested in God at all but only in what they say about Him."

I know what you mean about how to classify this great book. It's like a parable, laced with deep truth. The quote you cited is particularly striking to me given my career as a creative in entertainment and media. All too easily, we can take the gifts and talents we've been given and fashion them into idols before the Giver.
