SRP 2018 Week 2: Music

If you decide to check it out, I highly recommend you listen to the audio. Music is such a huge part of the story, and the accompanying music adds a whole other dimension to the narrative. Don't cheat yourself with text-only!

Good addition! I didn't enjoy it (maybe I should have listened to the audio) but definitely inclusive of the music theme!

The music makes a huge difference. I am not even sure I would have enjoyed it without the music (and also the narrators were very good).

Cool - I borrowed Vacationland from a friend but haven't got to it yet. Looking forward to it.

Ghachar Ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag; The Narrative of Sojourner Truth; and Erebos by Ursula Poznanski.
I will reply to this post with reviews once I'm out of work!
I finished reading 2Brides 2Be by Laura Leigh Abby and Daughter of Blood by Anne Bishop.
I enjoyed both books, one being nonfiction and the a fantasy novel.

Your books count whether you follow the theme or not, but they're there to get out you of your reading comfort zone if you're looking for something new. Keep reading everyone!

And do librarians have access to prize level info? I'm going to lose track sooner than later.

This book accidentally fits in with this week's theme. A couple of the characters who are involved in the book's mystery are musical virtuosos (virtuosi). [Spellcheck thinks I'm wrong either way!].

I read Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation a few years ago. It got great reviews, but I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't really academic, but it assumed a lot of knowledge that would make it difficult for followers of current day hip-hop to get into. Don't think it would appeal to teen hip-hop fans except for the absolutely most dedicated.
I have never read Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlistso I think I will pick it as my music theme book since it is so iconic.
And I need to find my copy of Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches that my daughter gave me for Christmas. It must be somewhere in my house! Sounds like people are really enjoying it.

Thanks!! I read My Name is Mary Sutter a while ago (also partially set in Albany) and didn't realize the author had written another book. Adding to my list.

The Bingo sheets are just another way to track your reading and give you ideas for different reads. Those can be posted here, or you can report them to your local APL branch. Just let your librarian know that you're in the Goodreads group so they can add them to the list we already have for you.

You hit the 12 book mark to get your level 4 prize. Well done! I hope you plan to continue reading and posting your reviews and recommendations this summer.

I've read this one, too, and agree with your assessment.

I also finished, "Spoonbenders", by by Daryl Gregory. It had a lot of kudos, but I did not love any of the characters.
I also finished "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI," by David Grann. Which was a fascinating story.
Currently, I am listening to "And Sometimes I Wonder About You,"
by Walter Mosley and still making my way through "The Executioner's Song," by Norman Mailer .

I enjoyed Killers of the Flower Moon as well.

@SusanDE, @Karie, @JenB, you have all reached Level 1 prize: please stop into your local Albany Public Library branch to receive your first prize!

@Katie, I have added your completed books and you have two prizes to pick up at your local Albany Public Library branch! Please let the desk staff know you are in the Goodreads SRP group!

Think Raising Arizona meets Edward Abbey meets Nevada Barr.
Zany characters, if somewhat far-fetched. Light enough not to be a downer as it comments on habitat loss, but smart enough to offer social commentary on contemporary Florida and its environmental costs.

Kendra, I have added this finished book! Great job!

Alicia, I added your Jay-Z read to your list. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I also read “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius. I enjoyed this one a lot and encourage anyone who likes philosophical reads to give it a try.
For the theme, I’m currently reading “How Music Got Free” by Stephen Witt...so far a really fun read (especially coming from the Napster generation).

@Rich, I have added your two completed books for this week!

This week, we are highlighting books about music. Albert Einstein said, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.” People find inspiration, comfort, and memories, among other things, in the music they listen to. There's a reason we look to find meaning in the lyrics of our favorite songs. Below you will find some recommendations for books about, or featuring, music.
Remember to comment if you have finished a book this week, including the title and author. You can also stop into your local APL branch and pick up a BINGO card, if you prefer pen and paper to screen and keyboard!
