It is controversial whether Aristotle holds a monistic or a pluralistic conception of happiness in the Nicomachean Ethics ; that is, whether he thinks that happiness consists in just one good or more than one kind of good. In particular, some have thought, especially in light of Aristotle’s praise of the contemplative life in NE Book X, chapters 7–8, that he holds that the happiest life consists in as much contemplation as possible.
