Steampunk is really not my genre, which is probably why it took awhile for me to get into this book. But Jim Butcher is just a good writer, and eventually I was hooked. I loved this new world, even though I have a hard time imagining the airships - I'm not sure if they're supposed to be like old fashioned sailing ships, but the etheric "sails" he describes don't sound anything like it.
Be that as it may, of course it's the characters that are a treat, once the background set-up is explained. We have disgraced Fleet Captain Grimm, who now commands the merchant ship Predator, as well as his motley crew. We have the only child of the esteemed noble Lancaster family, Gwendolyn, who is determined to serve in the military against the (seemingly) expressed objections of her mother. We have her warrior-born cousin Benedict, some kind of human-feline hybrid. We have crazy etherialists, and you'll have to read the book because it would take too long to explain what they are. We have the shy but strong Bridget, reluctant to leave her father to serve her military time as each family is supposed to. We even have sentient cats. When you put them all together in a covert mission for the ruler of the Albion Spire, you have a rollicking great adventure. And unfortunately, now I will have to be patient as no one knows when book 2 will be out!
