Welcome to the Fall for the Indie Book Challenge 2014!

What's this all about?

Well, as an independent author in-between book releases, I realized that I had a big megaphone that I wasn't using, and I wanted to showcase some other talented independent authors. But a lot of the tools out there were impersonal, and the noise was so loud that it was hard to be heard.

So I thought, hey, why don't I host 15 authors on my blog during the fall? Which then turned into a big ol' challenge, Goodreads group...and so on.

Here's the gist:

From 1 September through 22 December, I will be hosting one Independent/Small Press/Self-Pubbed (heretofore called "Indie") per week on my blog. Guest posts, interviews, Goodreads reviews, the whole gambit.

"That's great and all, but where do I come in?" you say, worried that you joined this group for nothing.

To join this challenge, you are welcome to find 15 authors of your own and give them the red carpet treatment...or you can simply find indie authors listed in our Books discussion folder* and pledge to read and review 15 of them during the challenge.

For indie authors, the review is key to exposure - it's no longer enough to say, "This book exists." So the more folks read and review - the more exposure for our indie friends.

*As an indie author, my first reaction is to post my book promo whenever I see stuff like this. And post away, kids - we've created folders for each of you to help folks easily find your book info. Just make sure you put your stuff in the right place so you can get the exposure.

Welcome!!

Small and independent presses qualify, as well as self-pubbed authors. If it's not one of the big five - Hachette, HarperCollins, MacMillan, Penguin/Random House, or Simon and Schuster (or their subsidiaries) - it's fair game.

Hi Meg, I think we're sticking with full-length novels for this go-round.

Meredith Stoddard (wouldbejane) | 12 comments I'm in. I read constantly, and frequently read indies. It's always a challenge to find god ones. Plus, I can always use some blog fodder. Goodlittlewitch kindly added my book already. I look forward to seeing what every one is reading.

We welcome you to read and support whatever indie material you like!

But the challenge is only for novels... Or else it wouldn't be much of a challenge!

If it's a collection, then sure! (I was thinking you meant reading 15 flash fiction pieces and calling it a day, hah!)

We can add a genre for misc, just needs to be over 50k words.

Meredith Stoddard (wouldbejane) | 12 comments Do you mind if I invite others through my blog to join?

Done. Here's a link. https://meredith-stoddard.squarespace...

Also, I didn't see a thread for historical fiction. Can that be added?

I'm advertising it all over facebook and twitters to get more readers. Good luck everyone!

Linda Hamonou | 22 comments Question: Where do we post our reviews? Shall we all have a thread each where to put our reviews links so that they can be counted?

message 26: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia Vitsky (anastasiavitsky) | 1 comments Great idea! Now how do you decide what's small press? I've been meaning to do a 25 for 25 challenge, i.e. featuring 25 m/m and f/f authors. How small is small?

message 27: by S. Usher (new)

S. Usher Evans (susherevans) | 48 comments Mod
Anastasia - Just not one of the big five or their subsidiaries.

Awesome! I might not add reviews directly on Monday as I'm beta reading at the moment, but I'll get started soon. ;)

Jason Crawford (jasonpatrickcrawford) | 11 comments This is exciting! I hope as many of you as possible are available on Nook, cause that's my machine of choice! (My phone got smashed, so Kindle is harder for me to access...sadface).

Good luck to all!

message 34: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Cook | 2 comments This is fantastic. Thank you so much for doing this, and taking advantage of that megaphone. As an indie author, I was linked here by one of the people doing the reading challenge... so your efforts to get people to put the word out seem to be working.

message 35: by Sue (new)

Sue Perry | 3 comments This is great! However I am flummoxed about the categories and am wondering if it would help to have a "hybrid genre" group. Meanwhile, I am posting my speculative fantasy detective novel in the science fiction group...
