I've seen this done in some other groups and thought it might be fun. So, what's so "bossy" about the Bossy Reads Challenge? Well, someone else tells you what to read and you get no choice in the matter. What's in it for you? You get the opportunity to read something you may have overlooked otherwise, you might expand your reading horizons, and you might get to know someone in the group you wouldn't have otherwise.

So here's the process:
1. Comment here to tell me you'd be interested in doing a Bossy Read Challenge. If you have any limitations (i.e. no horror, nothing over $10, ebook only, etc.), please be sure to say so when you sign up for the reading challenge.
2. I'll pair each person up with a singular partner who is also interested in doing the Bossy Reads Challenge.
3. You should look at your partner's GoodReads profile to see what learn a little more about them. Then, based on your new found knowledge of your partner, you should come back here to challenge them to read something that you've already read that they have not read yet. This does NOT have to be a time travel book. You also shouldn't compel the person to read a book that you've written.
4. When you've finished reading the book your partner assigned to you in the Buddy Reads Challenge, write a review and link to it here and/or copy the review of your book here. Don't forget to link to the book for us.

Time Period for Bossy Reads Challenge #1:
Joining & Pairing: Through September 15th
Reading & Reviewing: September & October 2014

I'm throwing my name in the hat here. I just ask for no bodice rippers. I also prefer the book to be available on Kindle.

Sadly, I have to many books on my TBR list to be dictated to. Count me out...

Ha. I guess I do, too. But I like the idea of reading something I wouldn't otherwise. :-)

Hmm ... I'm guessing is just going to be me and A.K. on this one. Anyone else?

message 6: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments I took a pass on this Amy because I am fully committed to my reading plan for the month of September, but if you do another one at a later date or if it is acceptable I don't read the book until October, then I would be in

Amy | 2208 comments Mod
It's a September and October read, so that would work.

message 8: by Gabrie'l (new)

Gabrie'l Harris (eclecticnerdism) | 1 comments I will join the "Bossy Challenge"! I just ask (for the sake of my college schedule) that the book be no more than 300 pages, be widely available, but not a paperback romance novel. Looking forward to the challenge!

message 9: by David (new)

David Kingman | 11 comments New to me but I'll bite. Most of my reading history is in Shelfari though.

Once you get paired up, you might message the person with your Shelfari link so that they can make a better guess at what you might like.

Yay! I'm glad we have more people interested. When the 15th hits, I'll put everyone's name in a randomizer program to pair everyone up.

message 12: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments For mine-I would ask that it be kept under 500 pages-I am not genre picky.

message 13: by Amy, Queen of Time (new)

Amy | 2208 comments Mod
Here are the results of the randomizer:

1. A.K.
2. Heather
3. Gabrie'l
4. David
5. Amy

If we had an even number, I'd just pair everyone off. But since we've got an odd number it makes sense to me for each person to be the "boss" of the person beneath them in the list and tell that person what to read. The last can wrap around to be the boss of #1.

So it will go like this:
*A.K. assigns a book to Heather
*Heather assigns a book to Gabrie'l
*Gabrie'l assigns a book to David
*David assigns a book to Amy
*Amy assigns a book to A.K.

Actually, I think it works a little better this way since we get to know 2 people we didn't already know.

Let the bossing begin!

A.K. wrote: "Yeah, why not. Could be fun. I'll also try any genre - there are a lot of genres I don't like but for the sake of the exercise, I'll give anything a shot. I'd also need it to be on Kindle, though."

A.K.: There are 2 books I want to make you read, and I'm having a hard time choosing. So I'll let it be your choice (I'm that kind of boss). You get to choose from either Spin (Spin, #1) by Robert Charles Wilson Spin or The Sparrow (The Sparrow, #1) by Mary Doria Russell The Sparrow.

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments Gabrie'l I have picked two books off of your "To Read" list that I have read and thouroughly enjoyed.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler which was a group read fairly recently, so there is lots of discussion for you to refer to . The other is The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri which I just finished reading this morning. It is not time travel, but an enjoyable read.

I can put a request on the wait list for Making History from the library, but it is a little longer than the limitation I posted so I may not get done before end of October , however I will make the effort. Hopefully it is one of those books that read quickly

A.K. wrote: "Okay. Good luck with getting it quickly, Heather. I hope you'll think it's worth the wait.

Amy, I now have Spin. It's in my reading queue. I should get to it shortly. Looking forward to it."

I think you'll like it. It's much better than anything else I've read of his (I liked the others as well). I look forward to your updates. I think it's a book I'll want to re-read at some point.

I get to read The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (by the author of Cloud Atlas) for my bossy read. I'm excited. :-)

Gabrie'l:
Are you still interested in joining us? David hasn't heard from you and your profile is set up to not accept messages from non friends. If your schedule is too busy to join, we can shift the list a bit.

David Kingman | 11 comments Not a lot of luck with this challenge so far. Heather?

message 20: by Candace (last edited Oct 03, 2014 11:10PM) (new)

Candace (cprimackqcom) I just saw this somehow, did you get your even number of readers? Oops never mind- I see it started in September. I'll be on the lookout for the next one! Have fun everyone!

Candace wrote: "I just saw this somehow, did you get your even number of readers?"

Gabrie'l seems to have dropped out.

Heather, David: did you ever match up? If not, we can insert Candace in Gabrie'l's place.

message 22: by David (new)

David Kingman | 11 comments I assigned myself "Gone Girl" no problem. Maybe next time.

message 23: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments Sorry, haven't come to this thread in a long time, did not know that Gabrie'l was not participating. I am still waiting for my book from the library. I would have chosen Painted Girls-and then maybe done a buddy read with you

message 24: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments I am late to the party, but I finally got my hands on Making History. It looks like an extremely long read-tiny print and over 500 pages

message 25: by Heather(Gibby) (new)

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 469 comments A.K- I am really enjoying it, he has a really witty writing style.

My book, Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, The: A Novel, has almost 500 pages as well. Since I'm listening to it as an audiobook, it's going by rather slowly. I'm finding it to be very fascinating in parts. But I find myself daydreaming during the bits about commerce and politics. The number of characters is impressive. The XRay portion of the Kindle book shows maybe 100 characters. I just hope that I'm remembering and forgetting the correct ones. I'm certainly not going to finish it in October. Maybe November.

I'm glad to hear that you're liking it. It's definitely among my top 5 favorites.
