message 13: by Celia (new)

Celia (cinbread19) “Atticus said to Jem one day, "I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird." That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. "Your father’s right," she said. "Mockingbirds don’t do one thing except make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corn cribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”
― Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

Fasiha (fasiha98) “So I was thinking, there're eighty-six thousand, four hundred seconds in a day, right? There're one thousand, four hundred and forty minutes in a day...There're one hundred and sixty-eight hours in a week. Around eighty-seven hundred and then some hours in a year, and you know what?...I want to spend every second, every minute, every hour with you...I want a year's worth of seconds and minutes with you. I want a decade's worth of hours, so many that I can't add them up.”
-Jennifer Armentrout

message 15: by Akhil teja (new)

Akhil teja (akhilsayaawesomeeeeee) it's a tough choice.. but, I'll choose

fault in our stars

There are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There's .1 and .12 and .112 and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I'm likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn't trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I'm grateful.”

Sheetal Dash (sheetalsdash) | 64 comments THE OPENING LINES I LOVE-

1.It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife from Pride and Prejudice. I believe everybody has either read or heard this line.

“Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn't stop for anybody.”

“I think that if I ever have kids, and they are upset, I won't tell them that people are starving in China or anything like that because it wouldn't change the fact that they were upset. And even if somebody else has it much worse, that doesn't really change the fact that you have what you have.”

“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.”

from The Perks of Being a Wallflower

message 23: by Colleen Marie (new)

Colleen Marie Zukowski (clevergirlfromgallifrey) So for my favorite singular line from a book I could think of soooooo many. But what always stands out in my head as one of my favorite lines of a book is more of a passage than anything. It is from Steinbeck's East of Eden (one of my favorite books ever). It is a conversation between Samuel and Adam, the first line being Samuel. (I apologize for any inaccuracies as I am typing from memory. Although I have recited this many times in my head and out loud so I may be pretty spot on. Haha.)

"Do you take pride in your hurt? Does it make you seem large and tragic?"

"I don't know."

"Well, think about it. Maybe you're playing a part on a great stage with only yourself as audience."

"Why do you come to lecture me? I am glad you've come but why do you dig into me?"

"To see whether I can raise a little anger in you. I am a nosy man. But there is all that fallow land, and here beside me is fallow man. It seems a waste. And I have a bad feeling about waste, Because I could never afford it. Is it a good feeling to let your life lie fallow?"

That poem... Oh my God.
Every time I read the book, I pick it apart; and every time I pick out different things from it.
It's the saddest one I think I've ever read, but also beautiful.

Certainly haunting.
Thank you so much for sharing! I too remember that poem.
