Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments I hope no one minds me jumping in to post this. The other threads had these up a month in advance, so I'll try to follow suit. Les Mis has been a mammoth of a chunker!

What would you all be interested in for the autumn season? Let's chat!

Linda | 1425 comments Was the plan to switch back and forth between classic chunksters and contemporary? If so then I have a nom if our next book is contemporary.

message 3: by Biblio (new)

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments Probably?

message 4: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments If we are going contemporary for the next book, I would like to nominate A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James. I've had it on my shelf for almost two years now.

Yes, this has been sitting on my shelf since it was published as well waiting for me to get to it. I'd be interested in reading this as a group.

Christopher (Donut) | 81 comments I would like to renominate Cryptonomicon.

Nice! Although I just started Reamde and I'm hoping to plow through it, so maybe by October I would be ready for another Stephenson. :D

I second this!

message 9: by Marie (new)

Marie | 83 comments I think Cryptonomicon sounds fascinating. I would also like to nominate it.

message 10: by Biblio (new)

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments This should go to a poll now? I'm not sure how Dianne does this. I could put a poll up for say, 2 days?

A Brief History of Seven Killings
Cryptonomicon

message 11: by Biblio (new)

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments I can't create a poll :(

Maybe just 'vote' here?

A Brief History of Seven Killings ---- 2
Cryptonomicon ---- ---- ---- ---- ---- 3

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments It looks like October's book is Cryptonomicon.

Would anyone be interested in leading the discussion for this?

Yay Cryptonomicon!

I might lead the discussion. I just want to read the book. Don't know much about it.

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments Thank you Christopher! (I hope)

Its such an odd sounding book! I'll try to get a copy, so far I haven't had any luck. I might have do the 2nd interlibrary loan of the year! So I've got 2 weeks to clear off my slate, not sure I can in time, but I'll try. Don't count me in for sure, I'll just snoop & help you set up threads if you need.

message 15: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments I'm in! I already have the book, now I just need to finish the last 700 pages of Reamde before October. :P

Greg (gregreadsalot) | 200 comments Hey everyone! I'm the guy who is terrible at buddy reads but was just curious as to what was being read. I've read Cryptonomicon. It is very enjoyable, very smart: one just has to admire the author.

Biblio, my library system had one copy. I checked it out but found it unreadable because the print was too close to the inner edges and, since it was a paperback, the font used was too small for me anyway. So I took it back, thought I'd check out some used book stores. But while at the library, I was perusing the shelves and I found a 2nd copy of Cryptonomicon which appeared to be the "big" original hardback. So, I grabbed it and went to check it out. The library didn't have it on their system, didn't know how it even got there, and told me to just take it as it wasn't owned by the library, even though it had library stickers on it. A gift from the universe. Sometimes that just happens! I read it, then donated it back to the library, that seemed only fair. (And, since I've had cataract surgery, I can read tiny print again!)

Biblio Curious (bibliocurious) | 164 comments Greg, that story is so delightfully random! Total prose poetry of real life. ^.^

message 19: by Rosemary (last edited Sep 15, 2018 11:25AM) (new)

Rosemary I'd like to join in for the reading of Cryptonomicon.
I would have voted for it if I'd seen the poll, so that makes 4 :)

Our library system only has one copy and it's out, but there were no other reservations, so I reserved it and I hope it will be returned for me before October 1st.

message 20: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary I'd say Cryptonomicon is a contemporary read. It was first published in 1999.

message 21: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments Given that we've only had the two nominations in the past month, and five people are interested in reading Cryptonomicon, I say that we go ahead with Cryptonomicon. Not sure that a poll at this point is going to accomplish much. Just my 2 cents.

message 22: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Bradshaw (llawryf) | 40 comments I'd read Cryptonomicon. Been on my TBR forever.

message 23: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Bradshaw (llawryf) | 40 comments Print and audio available at the library here.

message 24: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments It's available in all formats in my library too, it probably does not hurt that Stephenson is a local author here.

I already have a copy of the print book that I will be using.
