This is the discussion thread for the second book of the month, or group read, for September. Please remember to use the spoiler tags where necessary.

The other group read topic for this month (The Technician) can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

Thorkell Ottarsson | 209 comments This is a very promising series. I love the set up. The idea of the Flow (which makes it possible for people to travel faster than light but not communicate that fast) and how everything is based around the Flow.

I get the feeling that John Scalzi wanted to write his own Dune series. Instead of the spice we have the Flow and just like Dune, we are presented with a rotten and unjust galaxy filled with backstabbing and power hungry leaders.

The book also has great 3 lead characters. Sure, Kiva Lagos does resemble Han Solo a lot (just a female version) but she was so much fun that I did not mind that at all.

And talking about the Star Wars universe, here we have a "princess" who becomes an empress (emperox) of the Interdependency. Cardenia can be seen as a Princess Leia character, though the similarity is not as striking as with Kiva Lagos.

I'm not sure what I think of Marce Claremont. He is probably going to get more flesh in future books (I at least hope so).

SPOILERS FROM HERE ON!!!
There is also a lot of the modern world here. The inactivity and even denial of the change and collapse of the Flow reminds one of the discussions about climate change. Everything can come to an end but there is no political will to do anything about it (except for trying to cash in on it).

I look forward to finding out what lie will bring down The Interdependency. Any ideas? Also if The Interdependency is based on a self serving lie, what does The Interdependency stand for in our modern world? Capitalism?

Rather annoying paradox that - you end up visiting your relatives before they get notice of your intention to visit!

Thorkell Ottarsson | 209 comments LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And you could end up being stuck with the relatives for ever and not able to go home.

Thorkell Ottarsson | 209 comments You mean because of the change in the Flow? :)
