David (dbush) | 1 comments I hate to be vague, but here goes nothing:

I was a very early reader. In second grade in elementary school, I was in the school library and found an interesting-looking book from the "fifth grade" shelves. I took it and started reading. About a chapter or two into it, the librarian came over and started to scold me for reading books that were too high above my level. I started to read part of the book out loud to her, she got upset and took it from me. I never saw it again.

Lately I've found myself thinking back to that exchange, and I'd love to try and figure out what the book was - and maybe finally finish it!

Unfortunately I don't remember much about it at all. I didn't get very far, but I know it introduced me to the Sidhe (and taught me how to pronounce the word!) very early into the book.

I think the "magick" spelling of "magic" was used, but I could be wrong.

"Magick" may have been in the title. I was going through a big fantasy phase at the time, so any other generic fantasy word might have been in there - something that would have made it jump off the shelf to a fantasy-addicted 7-year-old.

I think it took place in Ireland.

Timewise, it would be published before 1986-1987.

I think the cover was mostly light blue in color.

It was most likely a paperback.

Thanks for any light you guys can shed on this!

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments Have you tried this list of Irish fantasy books? It's not very comprehensive but could be a good place to start. https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9...

There is also this list of books about the Sidhe, which you might have seen: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/2...

Do you think the author was Irish? It could be something by Patricia Lynch, Cormac MacRaois, O.R. Melling, or Michael Scott.

What country were you in when you read this as a child?

Aerulan | 1316 comments So I'm just gonna throw this one out there as a long shot, it's set in Ireland, came out just before your timeframe, YA and could have mentioned the Sidhe since it plays with other myths/folklore from the area, though it's been too long since I read it for me to remember specifically.

Bryn (brynplusplus) | 186 comments I don't remember if this book actually uses the word 'Sidhe' but it has fairies and a blue cover and is classic children's lit so has a good chance of having been in the library in the right time period:

Also it's just a really good book. :-)
