Got your thread updated. :)

Jessica wrote: "So. I'm heading to bed but I went ahead and rolled and we got a 3. If you don't mind, will someone go ahead and post it for me when it is time?"

In future, no rolling ahead of time please. I know it's nitpicking, but it does give your team a bit of an advantage in picking books earlier than anyone else otherwise. You can ask another team member to roll in your stead if the timing is inconvenient for you, then you can take care of posting to the Post Your Spot thread once you're up. Don't worry about it this time, though, just keep it in mind for the next roll.

Week 1: Roll 3

Equal Rites (Discworld, #3; Witches, #1) by Terry Pratchett
Book:
Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett
Qualification: Discworld #3
Finished: Sept. 16, 2018

Review:

Esk is blessed by a wizard with his powers before he dies, but he thought he was passing his powers down to the blacksmith's son. Granny, the midwife, reveals right after the wizard dies that the baby is actually a girl. There has never been a girl wizard, so they are puzzled on how to proceed. But ask Esk grows up, she shows a natural ability for magic, so Granny agrees to teach her. But Esk's powers prove too much for Granny to handle, so she takes her to the city to attend Unseen University to get a formal wizard education. Esk gets separated from Granny and has a few mini-adventures but they eventually reunite and arrive at the university. But still, the wizards there don't want to accept a girl wizard, so Esk will have to prove herself worthy. Where the story goes from here was kind of odd. I was expecting something different, maybe a bit more logical or following the example of other fantasy novels, but this series prides itself on being outlandish and silly, so I guess the ending is fitting.

I've been wanting to read the Discworld series for a long time because a funny, sarcastic fantasy series sounded like a winning combination. And while this third book in the series started off promising, it kind of went left at the end and didn't really impress me. It was also hard to get into the story at the beginning, so I kept putting it down in favor of reading other books. I'm on the fence now on whether I want to read more of these books, but I will probably give the series at least one more chance.

Review:
I absolutely adored this whole series. It completely captured my imagination from the first. Everything about the world building is so wonderful. I'm enraptured by all the details both historically and scientifically built into this story. Admittedly Matthew may not always be my favorite character but he still never failed to keep me interested. Gallowglass please oh please needs his own book. He's absolutely my favorite. And well I'd love more Chris and Mirriam too. Of course there's Marcus and Phoebe too. I always feel like you know it's a good book/series when you're just as interested in the side characters as the main.

While this book did give completion to a lot of the dangling threads, but there are still further threads I'd like to see explored. This book still feels like the beginning of a greater story to come. The world is changing and this book just provides the first impetus.

There's a lot that happens in this book and Diana and Matthew are in the center of it all yet again. I liked seeing Diana learn more and more about her powers and I loved seeing their family coming together around them. (view spoiler) I'm so glad I read this series when I did knowing the next book in this world comes out in just a couple of days. This book made me wish I was a witch and lived in this world.

The Gargoyle Gets His Girl (Nocturne Falls, #3) by Kristen Painter
Date Read: 9/15
Rating: ★★★★

This is a fun paranormal series. Nocturne Falls is a quirky town that celebrates Halloween 365 days a year. Nick is a gargoyle shifter and security guard while Willa is fae and a jeweler. Willa makes a wish with a piece of opal in the fountain that compels Nick into service as her guardian. Their races are enemies because fae enslaved gargoyles for years. They have many issues to overcome, including being kidnapped by Willa's sister. I enjoyed watching Willa discover her magical abilities again and her relationship with Nick develop. The ending felt a little rushed but it was an entertaining read overall. I will continue with the series and look forward to the next book.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

I was looking over the rules and saw that the books have to be at least 140 pages, and the book I read was 128 pages! Luckily I had already started another #3 series book, Equal Rites (Discworld, #3; Witches, #1) by Terry Pratchett , so I'm finishing it now. I should be done in about an hour.

I updated message 26 with my new review.

Still no update from Jessica or Katherine. I'll send them a message to see if they still plan on finishing their books tonight. One hour til the deadline!

Deadline has now officially passed, so I'm afraid you'll have to sit this roll out. I'll keep an eye on your situation to see if either of your missing members checks in again before Thursday. I certainly hope they do.
The only good news I have is that Shelby earned a bonus point with her first book, which you can either add to your next roll on Thursday or save for later.

Review:
Eliza is still after Michael and his family... but mostly she's after Michael. On the move across the country trying to escape both zombies and Eliza as well as bad/nasty human beings they come across. In the abyss of the apocalypse friends and love ones are loss in the battle of survival. I do find it interesting that the main bad guy, (Eliza) can control the zombies with mind control.

Tomas who his companions know him as Tommy, who is infinitely more than he appears and he's so sweet. Michael's very attached to Tommy and when Tom was crying he hugged him, and because they love him; Michael asked to adopt him. In Michael's words: "I should have known better; Tommy is a better person than I could ever hope to be."
So BT's real first name is Lawrence - awe he's embarrassed by his name and that's why he goes by a nickname. I loved Michael's rambling that he might as well adopt BT too because he's became apart of the family as well.

And now we come face to face with Eliza and she wants Tommy, and Tommy's self doubt, and doubt about his new family still wanting him is so sad, and completely understandable. Travis is such a great friend to Tommy trying to comfort and reassure him.

Jessica Week 1
Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth
Book: Allegiant
Pages: 526
Date Read: 9/17/18
How it Fits: #3
Rating: *****
Review: Tris is an amazing strong, courageous girl and I love her. I love Four and how he loves Tris so much and how he is willing to give up everything for her. I love how when Four's mother finds them, he is more concerned about Tris than his mother, and how he thinks that Evelyn is going to betray them. I thought that Tris was amazing when they faced Jeanine again and how she defeated her by using her Divergent powers.

Review:
Ok, so Dresden's world seems to be coming apart a bit at the seems. Dang but the evil forces almost seem to winning in this one. Poor Harry, he's so beat up and nothing seems to be going his way. This was a dark one, necromancers and lots and lots of evil. Harry's world is spinning and there's things going on inside his head that are only making things more complicated. I do love seeing his circle of friends standing up for Harry and showing him that there are people that care in his life.

There are loads of bad guys in this one and dang are they powerful. My whole body hurts for Harry with the damage he suffers here. Ouch! Harry feels like he needs to shoulder the whole of the world. It's hard for him to trust others to help him. And they all want to do their best for him. There's fun for having the coroner with you when he can take care of your wounds. And yeah, he's stronger than even he thought he could be. Also GO MOUSE! Love that dog. And Bob too of course. :) Dark forces are a foot, well then you better call on Harry. And it was nice to see him playing nice with the White Council as well. Also oh yes, T-Rex rules! That was such an awesome sequence.

So much fun. Loved this ride and this entire series. :)
