Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments Hey! Joanne and I are planning to buddy read Mortal Engines by Philip Reeves in anticipation for the movie coming out in December. Anyone else interested is welcome to join!

Right now the soonest I can get my hands on my copy is the 24th, but my personal most anticipated read of the year is out on the 25th and I intend to drop everything and read it the second it’s available. So I’ll probably only get to this book in the last few days of September, but I didn’t want to make anyone who’s ready right now wait any longer, so I decided to go ahead and create the thread. Feel free to start now or whenever you’re ready!

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I saw this book on a list of recommendations from one of my favourite authors, but I didn’t know it was going to be a movie until I was sitting in the theatre watching the trailer. Beyond that I don’t know much about it. I’m just tentatively committing to the first book for now. I’ve got a lot on my plate for the rest of 2018, but maybe I’ll get hooked on this series and binge it anyway lol.

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments I can't start it until the 24th. It looks like my copy of that other book is coming to me pre-release so I'll probably start this right on the 24th!

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments Finally started!

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments This book is so weird lol. Kind of reminds me of Airborn (Matt Cruse, #1) by Kenneth Oppel

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments Oh dear. Comparing the description of the female lead in the book to what they show in the trailer. Sigh.

message 7: by Shelby (new) - added it

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments Nearly done. I wonder if the movie will turn as dark as the book does?

message 8: by Shelby (new) - added it

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments Just finished. This is one of those books that felt more to me like a middle grade book so I was wondering why it was in the young adult section until I got to the end and understood. There's some things you can't get away with in middle grade.

I liked this, but I'm not sure I'll pick up the rest of the series.

Great review!

I've had some brief clips pop up on my social media, and I have to say that other than how much they 'hollywoodized' the lead girl's appearance, it looks like one of the better fantasy adaptations I've seen in a while. I'm looking forward to it.

I agree. I think the cinematography alone would be worth the price of admission.

If a bunch of people have their holds suspended, you might get it much sooner. It's happened to me a few times. In that case, you might still get it in time for the movie? I also listened to it via audio. It's probably got so many holds due to the movie.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping! I'll probably see it anyway even if I haven't gotten the book yet. I showed my husband the trailer and he's interested in seeing it too.

I am always on the look out for a series that was as well done as the Harry Potter books and movies.... Over the last decades, there were so many book to movie options out there, but I just didn't get into them like good old HP.

I'm thinking I might have to use my Audible credit on it because I just saw the extended trailer and I really want to read/listen to it before the movie comes out! I'm #13 for 2 copies now on Overdrive! They got another copy! lol. I'm going to wait and see where my listening is/where I am in the queue by Dec 7. It's a 9-hour audiobook, I can do that in 2-3 days.

I read an article with Peter Jackson, who is producing and co-wrote the screenplay but not directing (some newbie director), and he said he really hopes it makes it to franchise because he's really excited about creating the next books in the series.

Now I'm #9 of 3 copies! They keep getting another copy every time I check. lol. It's getting more popular. I still have an Audible credit just in case though. We may not see it opening weekend but now my husband is talking about it more than I am! lol.

#6 on 4 copies! I'm getting there! lol. We've already decided to go see it in IMAX. The CGI is going to be craaaaazy!

I was still #5 of 4 copies today so I used an Audible credit and will be able to start listening tonight! :)

I'm about 25% through the audiobook and we saw the movie in IMAX today! It's visually stunning but the storyline felt lacking. I liked it but I think I'll like the books better. My husband gave it a 6. The CGI is craaaazy but it seems they went more for spectacle than for story. The only character I felt anything for was Shrike because they gave him a good backstory and he was a badass character. I would've liked to have seen more of him. I needed more from Hester and a lot more from Valentine. Back to the book!

I told my husband what Hester is supposed to look like in the book because she's "ugly pretty" in the movie. *eyeroll* Make her hideous, dammit! People should recoil in disgust!

I finished the audiobook today! I liked it! Biiiiig differences between the book and the movie. HUGE. I liked the book better and am hoping the series gets better. Holy deaths at the end!! I was surprised by that.

Honestly I was expecting much worse after the reception it’s gotten. It looks great, and I really liked what the did with Shrike. They really needed to put more work into the script, though. If I didn’t know the characters from the book I don’t know if I would’ve gotten as much out of it. The movie is bombing pretty badly, which makes me sad because I wouldn’t have minded another one of these, though I still have a problem with how they handled Hestor’s appearance. I really would’ve liked if they’d stuck to the original ending too.

Agreed. My husband and I liked Shrike best. The movie version. It was visually stunning but the storyline was lacking. When we were talking about it after, my husband couldn't remember any of the character names! Nobody stood out to him except Shrike. I don't think they'll be making the sequel. :/ CGI costs a lot of money.

Shelby Suderman | 2180 comments That amount of work they put into the sets and visual effects costs a lot of money and it doesn’t look like they’ll be making it back unfortunately.

Right now the big movie is Spider-Man but ya, Aquaman starts on Thursday and I think Bumblebee is coming soon too. Those three have been getting a lot more buz.
