I'm super curious. Does anyone think that people can have powers for real?

When I was about 14 I befriended a girl on a poetry website who told me that she could control the direction of the wind at will and make the rain fall harder. I didn't know much more about her and I eventually lost contact.

It always intrigued me since she never gave me her real name. I didn't even know what country she was from but I assumed the US from her spelling.

Maybe she was just making up a story for reactions, but we only talked about it once. But it's always done my head in a little the way she came out with it. Like it was really bothering her since she had no one to tell except for someone on the internet she'd never meet.

But what if she was telling the truth?

What do you guys think? Can you have supernatural abilities? Are their things people can do you just can't explain?

Or is everything explainable?

Cem Bilici (cembilici) In my experience when you tell people fantastical things they tend to disregard them as false, even people/forums where they discuss said things specifically, inviting it. It's the most bizarre thing to me.

I don't think everything is explainable, yet. There are things beyond our current ken. In other words, I think one day they will be.

Neil Bursnoll | 109 comments As a child I had a recurring dream where I could fly. It happened so often I was convinced it was real - not that I ever tried it out!

I don't think superpowers are real though. There'd be more rumours and handed down tales if they were scientifically possible.

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments It depends on the kind of superpowers you are talking about. They have power lifting competitions. Wouldn't those guys qualify as having super strength? or Usain Bolt with super speed?

Most of the superpowers that I think are possible have to do with the mind. Like remote viewing or telepathy. Some people if they trained their mind to do it could give themselves an extra boost of adrenaline and ignore pain to make it so they can do things they normally wouldn't be able to, but afterwards they would feel it!

Samantha Strong (samanthalstrong) | 206 comments Depends on what you mean by supernatural abilities. Do I think that this girl could control the rain and wind? Mmmmmmmmmm ... mmmmmm ....... Probably not. Do I think it's possible? Mmmmm ..... Maybe. But I believe it goes back to metaphysical/spiritual abilities, like what Brian is saying. A shaman or spiritual leader, say in Native American cultures, could perhaps do it with enough years of training.

I do, however, believe in telepathy, past lives, astral projection, angels/demons, psychic ability, etc. Anything to do with mind-to-mind, I believe it's possible. I especially believe in life beyond death because I've experienced some things. But manipulating the physical world is one step beyond that, and I'm more skeptical.

I do think mind over matter explains quite a lot of things. And I think that we've perhaps lost a little of those secrets of just what we can achieve by hunting down and burning all the people who were good at it throughout history :p

Makes good story ideas though.

And there are things you can't explain. Like where all the hairpins go. Seriously, you buy a pack of 150 and you can't find -one- a week later.

Cem Bilici (cembilici) It's Magneto. That unruly hair of his with static electricity as a result of his powers. Needs all the hairpins he can get.

Maybe the girl who said she could control weather could just foresee it?

I had some acquaintances some years back who were Wiccan, a couple, and the guy would tell stories of things he claimed he could do but laughingly said he would have "power struggles", as he put it, with people, just random people. The way he explained it he was basically trying to assert his power on them and break through their defences, kind of like a hacker I guess.

Did I think he was full of it? Yeah. Do I think that it is possible, sure. Regardless he was a douche, IMHO.

I saw a forum for the paranormal and all that where some guy said he had dreams that came true, and that he could change what happened, in effect changing time. Not a single person on the forum was kind to this guy, calling him a liar and saying that only god could know the future and basically acting like they wanted to start building a pyre.

Two different cases where if these people were born in another time would have faced an inquisition. So you can kind of get why more people don't come out with it if they do have gifts/powers, lol.

Samantha Strong (samanthalstrong) | 206 comments I'm inclined to believe both stories. I think we are surrounded by auras and can affect one another's. Douchey guy sounds like he's full of it, though. Nice fiction he created, but the bottom line would be--why would he have power struggles all the time with other people's auras?

I think we ascribe too much detail to the metaphysical, though. To continue the aura example, do I think someone had a blue or red one? No. Maybe there are types of people who have similar characteristics, so "red" people are generally one way versus another ... But then when you get into "but red people always have babies on the full moon" or whatever (which I obviously just made up), that's just ... no.

Cem Bilici (cembilici) Yeah it's just wrong, true or not. I met some other not so douchey Wiccans, one ran a shop. He managed to exert some influence on my hand without touching it, his on either side of mine a fair distance. But with stuff like that you have to wonder if its suggestion on your own part too and simple physiological tricks like you do when you're a kid and wow everyone.

Yeah I'm not sure where I stand on the whole aura thing and aura photography etc.

People spend thousands on courses in reiki healing and spiritualism etc to try and build these powers and elevate themselves. I've known one person who did just that and he told me with great gusto about the courses and the "levels" he was going up and how the philosophy behind it was to help mankind to evolve into a golden era, etc, etc. Great! But, why are they charging people bucket loads of money to do so? I get people gotta eat, pay rent and bills... But charity organisations do it not-for-profit, so why can't they too?

It didn't seem to gel with him. He also spent a great amount of time seeing a psychic medium and played me one of his session tapes one time. It was the atypical croaky voiced "trance" stuff of B horror. I did my best to be respectful and not laugh as I listened, luckily he was in his own zone and didn't notice my smirking.

I believe in stuff and have had a handful of experiences, but I keep a healthy level of scepticism too, even calling my own stuff into question to make sure it was what it was.

So, yeah. Don't show me any orb photos please. lol.

Brian Basham (brianbasham) | 390 comments I have actually had some dreams that ended up happening in real life. It's strange because it's just a normal dream with nothing really worth remembering but then when it happens you get that feeling of dejavu. The most vivid one I had, I was in a pool with my brother, I had a yellow egg in my hand and I threw it at my brother cracking him in the forehead with it. About 3 months later it's my brother's birthday and we're having a pool party. He gets these things called 'gator eggs' that is supposed to be a pool game. Anyway my brother decides I'm having too much fun in the pool so he kicks me in the fruit basket. He then pushes off the side of the pool and swims away. Naturally I get a bit angry about it and I happen to have one of those yellow gator eggs in my hand.

They don't happen very often, maybe once every 3 or 4 years. I'm never quite sure when one of my dreams will become reality. Those dreams are very easy to forget when your other dreams are so interesting.

Cem Bilici (cembilici) And imagine if you had control over when and what you saw? That would definitely be in the realms of superpower depending on the level of control and fidelity you had with such visions of the future. Say in an altercation, knowing what would happen beforehand.
