Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments Spoilers welcome discussion for part two chapters 48-60 of Robert Galbraith's Lethal White.
If the first to post please briefly summarize to guide the discussion.

Chapter 48 (Investigative meeting, Robin has information)
Matthew is strangely uninterested in Robin's whereabouts. At the meeting she reveals a recording of Jimmy and Flick arguing about a "missing" piece of paper and that Flick speaks Polish so she's likely the Polish maid at Chiswell's town house.
Billy wants to see Strike. They discuss suspects, Jimmy and Flick at the top of the list. Lorelei texts, Robin doesn't want to go home.

Chapter 49 (Lorelei wants to meet, the art gallery)
Strike visits the Drummond art gallery; Jasper's friend reveals that Jasper and Kinvara's marriage was not on good terms and why Raphael was fired from the gallery after having sex on the job.

Chapter 50 (Charlotte at the gallery, making a play)
Charlotte is a piece of work, alternatively haranguing and begging, she wants Strike back. Right.

Chapter 51 (Robin and Flick party and discuss Jimmy - and Billy)
Robin almost finds a place to live, Flick takes her to her tiny flat which is full of partiers and other anarchists but her flatmate already offered the space to someone else. Robin must be desperate to want it; she searches for the incriminating paper, finding it in the bathroom in a box of sanitary products.

Chapter 52 (Robin wakes Strike calling with news of the letter)
The cryptic note stirs the investigative juices - who of the suspect list could have killed Jasper? His thoughts stray to Charlotte....

Chapter 53 (an earring out of place and the letter Flick hid leads to clues on her involvement in the set up for the murder)
Interviews all around, shaking out what happened. Della is willing since Aamir has disappeared, Billy in hospital and the stable hand, Tegan will talk to Robin.
Robin discovers a diamond stud earring on the floor of her bedroom, Sarah's. The clues she has ignored start to fall into place. Matthew isn't with Tom.

Chapter 54 (Cormoran interviews Della, past and current relations with the Chiswells.)
Della is worried about Aamir and disturbed about her husband's behaviour though still denying any involvement with the Chiswells.

Chapter 55 (Robin is packed and confronts Matthew)
Matthew is alternatively shocked and "contrite" and combative. Their argument is gut wrenchingly emotional and a long time coming. If you harbored any ideas the relationship should be salvaged they leave quickly.

Chapter 56 (Strike talks to Billy and wonders what is up with Robin and Matthew)
Billy tells his story about the strangled child and escaping Aamir under the watchful eyes of the doctors.

Chapter 57 (Robin stays with Vanessa, Strike wants to dig for evidence)
Robin is determined to keep up with the case, not revealing her situation to Strike or talking to Matthew)

Chapter 58 (Robin interviews Raphael, no longer "Venetia")
Raphael shows little love for his half siblings and Robin confesses her marriage has broken up. She learns more about the suicide of the Winn's daughter, Rhiannon after nude photos of her circulated among the fencing team

Chapter 59 (pairs - two people, a couple, who did it?)

Chapter 60 (plans are made to dig in the dell)
Robin and Strike continue as if nothing is wrong though Strike senses there is.

Adirarotstein | 1 comments WTF? Seriously? He was an artisinal gallows maker? Well that just came out of thin air. How f-ing disappointing!

Maureen Carden | 173 comments I never would have guessed it. It was a new one on me.
I would have thought something about Rhiannon being bullied so much by Freddie that she committed suicide and the parents teamed up to kill Jasper after the blackmail scheme failed.
I do think it was the picture of the gallows being used on a Brisitish citizen that made it blackmail worthy.

Maureen Carden | 173 comments Can't summarize, returned book.

Maureen Carden | 173 comments Okay, as much as I did enjoy the two day slog, this book basically ended not with a bang but a whimper. Apologies to T.S. Eliot.

I also don't mind relationship cliffhangers if there aren't several years between books and if they aren't carried out for too many books. I think maybe one more book.

Sybotes | 111 comments Sorry, something in disarray here? Why do people comment on the gallowmaking that is only revealed in chapter 63?

Maureen Carden | 173 comments I didn't have the book in front of me, so remiss of me. I tend to respond to the posts I see, I also don't come to these discussions until I have finished the book.

message 8: by Ann (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments Sybotes: I apologize for not getting the summaries up first to guide the segment discussion and help prevent early reveals.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16929 comments Maureen - the back and forth relationship switch backs are definitely cliffhangers and are are pretty edge of your seat in this segment. I can't help but wish Robin had left Matthew a long time ago, but am glad she is establishing herself separately in her career without more entanglement with Strike. His feelings about Charlotte and rebound relationships after their breakup are something to resolve.
