The wonderful Emily Asher-Perin recently posted an article over at Tor.com about the Best Enemy Duos Who Care About Each Other. Vicious/Vengeful's Eli & Victor were, of course, listed, as well as frenemy faves like Charles & Erik from X-Men (my personal favorite), The Doctor & The Master/Missy from Doctor Who, and Sherlock & Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes.

What is your favorite Best Frenemy duo and what do you think makes this narrative structure so effective?

Tanner Benham | 1 comments Have not read this series yes but worked at Barnes & Noble and was interested in it. The giveaway sent me here.

Al (villainy) Ahh you’ve listed several of my faves, but I’ll add Seifer and Squall from ffviii, Harry and Draco, Thor and Loki.

Came here from the giveaway btw!

Margarita (margaritathedrink) (margaritathedrink) | 1 comments Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

I mean it counts right? Its proof you can be your own worst frenemy.

Also came for the giveaway as well but staying for the discussions!

Erin B. | 1 comments Sherlock and Moriarty for sure! Especially the BBC interpretation of the duo. I love Moriarty's portrayal in that one.

The giveaway sent me here, but I'm excited to read this book with a crew. 😁

Mandy | 1 comments A pair of my favorite frenemies are Nancy and Sarah from The Craft

Nancy = the ultimate mean girl. And I think it's effective because some struggle/competition is at the heart of many interesting tales. Sometimes it's internal other times it's with the cool chick at your high school who takes witching too hard!

Came for the giveaway but excited to be part of an active group. Plus I just got Vicious from my local library, perfect timing!!

KayHokis (khokis) | 1 comments My favorite frenemies duo is from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows. Nina and Matthias, who both loathe and love each other, hands down. I was directed here via the giveaway!

David (dassaf4) | 21 comments Patricia and Laurence from Charlie Jane Anders' most excellent "All the Birds in the Sky" is one standout pair from recent memory. I think the frenemy dynamic allows for a lot more freedom of movement in the character arcs. In this story, the protagonists pretty much traversed a full circle relative to each other, and I just loved how their relationship resolved.

Raquel Guevarra (rguevarra) | 1 comments My favorite frenemies have got to be Feyre and Rhysand from the ACOTAR series because they started out as enemies in the first novel, became friends when Rhys saved her from Tamlin, and eventually became lovers. It showed great character development for both characters and reveled more of Rhy's backstory to make him seem less of an enemy.

Giveaway brought me here!
