QuicksilverHi everyone!

Actually updating on a Thursday!

This week I finished:
Quicksilver - Man, glad to have this over. I love Neal Stephanson so much, but this was not a fun read, at all. I felt like there was no plot, it was all set up for something that's going to happen next book. But I'm not interested enough to read the next book. This was my final book for ATY, first 10 books on my TBR list. Done with challenges for the year!!

If anyone wants to see my final spreadsheet across challenges it's here.

I also finished Mech Cadet Yu Vol. 3 which wraps the series up, I enjoyed it. Was sort of Iron Giant meets Pacific Rim.

Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge - picked this up on a whim because I kind of loved the idea of mixed drinks as magic potions. It was a fun read, although I think some of the character relationships got kind of awkward and messy. I'd still read more, if he continues the series.

Rose Vol. 2: Ghosts - catching up on comics, if you can't tell. This is a fun one about magic being banned, but a rogue woman becomes the last Guardian to try to save the kingdom from an evil queen.

currently reading:

Home - Getting a bit of a slow start on this, It's been a little too long since I read Binti so was a little lost at the beginning. Getting into it now as I remember more, should finish it pretty quickly.

Moon Called - re-read via audio book, it's been a while since i started the series so good to get a refresher.

iZombie, Vol. 4: Repossession - my hoopla checkout's almost over so trying to finish this one up. I still prefer the show, but it's alright.

QOTW:

How is your reading shaping up as we enter the colder months? Are you reading more, because the weather is getting worse so there's more time to be spent indoors? Or less because of school, fall/winter holidays, trying to do stuff before the weather completely turns?

I read pretty consistently through the year, but I always feel less guilty about just curling up with a book for an hour or more if the weather is nasty. If it's beautiful out, I feel like i need to be outside running or doing yardwork, or at least reading outside where I can enjoy the sun.

Daniele Powell (danielepowell) | 183 comments Only one finish to report this week: Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood, which I used for the set in a BRICS country/Africa for the Book Riot and ATY challenges. A wonderful read, but I'll still keep a lookout for the audiobook version. I'd love to hear it in his own voice.

Started on the audiobook of Mr. Mercedes which will keep me company on my upcoming road trips. That'll fill my ATY Edgar award winner prompt and bring me to 46/52.

QOTW: I've been surprisingly consistent this year, but I totally agree that it feels more acceptable to curl up with a book when the weather starts to get chillier.

Guess what? I'm still reading Moby Dick. bleh. However, I'm making a point to set aside more time so that I can finish it up by next week's check in. Only 110 pages left to go! Too bad it takes about 30 minutes to read 20 pages . . . At any rate, my opinions regarding Moby Dick and Ishmael haven't changed since I posted a few days ago.

My reading habits definitely change in the Fall. Because I work at a university, late August through December are my busiest time of year, with September and October being the worst of it, so some days I don't even get to pick up a book (and some weeks I don't make Goodreads posts ). I settle in to more reading over the Christmas break and teach one less course in the Winter term, so January-March is prime reading time for me.

Sheri, I was just looking over your spread sheet and realizing that, if I wanted to mark it down, I've managed to complete both the ATY and Read Harder challenges based on all of the books I've read this year (i.e., popsugar and books I've read and/or listened to independent of that challenge). Neat!

Haha, well at least if you fall a bit short on popsugar due to Moby Dick, you know you completed two challenges anyhow ;)

This past week I finished Get Well Soon: History's Worst Plagues and the Heroes Who Fought Them. I was a lot closer to the end than I realized as there is a huge section on notes and references and such. For non-fiction, I loved this book. It was so interesting and made me feel so many different things, particularly the chapter on lobotomies, a man-made plague mid-20th century.

I have now started The Rise and Fall of Alexandria: Birthplace of the Modern Mind. I am not very far into it yet, but I'm already hooked. I suspect I'm going to feel anguish reading this book about so much that was lost and where we might be if it wasn't. I'm already feeling that.

QOTW: Since I mostly read in bed at night, it doesn't change too much year round. My kids are all adults so my time is not tied to the school year too much.
