I'll start:

I love stories with a great deal of mystery and suspense set in eerie and remote locations, like haunted-mansion or there-is-something-in-the-woods stories. I prefer stories with engaging characters and a solid backstory/worldbuilding. What I don't like is excessive blood and torture.

I recently read Ghost trapper 1 + 2 and the Lockwood & Co series. Both good fun, but I'm looking for something a little darker and scarier. Other books I liked are, Relic, Hex and The Ice lands (minus the ending).

I love to hear from you guys what I should read next!

I'm with you Lisette, I don't go much for the blood and gore unless it's black humour. A few books that have genuinely given me the goosebumps are
Dark Matter
Bird Box
The Mall
and quite a few short stories. I listen to a lot of online short horror, and my favourite site is
https://knifepointhorror.libsyn.com/ Lots of truly creepy stories, most only about 40 minutes long, usually small-town U.S. or something-in-the-woods type stuff.

Hi Melanie, spot on! I have read Dark Matter and Bird Box and loved both books. I am definitely going to read The Mall - sounds fascinating and I discovered that I have read 'Under Ground' and 'The Apartment' is already on my Want to read list :) I hadn't considered podcasts yet, this one is on my fav list too. Thank you!

Maybe The ice lands is something you would like. It's rather creepy and eerie. The ending is slightly disappointing but nonetheless it's a good read.

The Vanishing I liked this one. It was spooky with a good story.

Lots of things by Carlos Ruiz Zafon....The Shadow of the Wind , The Angel's Game, Marina..all eeru/creepy, love letters to Barcelona and its Gothic neighborhood

Thanks Susan and Linda! The Vanishing sounds really good! And I loved Marina. I have The shadow of the wind sitting on my Bookshelf. Should read that one soon (although I don't expect it to be spooky).

I love edge of your seat suspenseful reading. If you’re into this type of reading I recommend
The List: A Thriller by J.A. Konrath (this a first in a series, which are all great)
No Exit and Eyeshot by Taylor Adams

I don't know..........for the first 50-75 pages, he keeps smelling burning flesh.........turns around or looks out his bedroom window........and sees a guy in a trenchoat and fedora, with a burned face, watching him. It was good enough for me! :D

He maintains that level of intensity for most of the first book (The Shadow). Might help if you know a tiny bit about the Spanish Civil War, and the repercussions under the dictator later.

My niece preferred the prequel, (The Angel's). A young man, under his successful bougie newspaper journalist mentor, gets the opportunity to publish his vampire stories in the paper, as serials (ca. 1920 or 1930). To celebrate, they take him to a bordello. There, he is smitten with this young girl, and saves his money anxiously in order to go back and see her again. When he gets there, the place is empty, and full of dust and cobwebs, as though no one had been there for years........and that's the first 50 pages.
